Because playing an MMORPG is both better and worse. A key to capturing that feel you love is finding a group of people who share your mindset to "hang out with" in the game.

The big difference is the limitation. Sitting around your table with your friends involves two things:

1. An environment that your group controls.

2. An environment that is only limited by your imagination.

An MMORPG does not have these. Your group is not in control--you are just occupants. You don't have access to a GM who will tailor the world for you, or listen to your arguments and make judgement calls, etc. You are at the mercy of the environment, which is unwavering (nor does it have a "pause" mode).

You are also limited by technology. Unlike in your table-top RPG, you can't do *anything* in these games. There will be objects you can't pick up, actions you can't perform, and NPC's who aren't fully interactive. This obviously is less "rich" than your table-top experience, but the nice trade-off is that you get to visualize that world, as opposed to merely conjuring it in your head.

Still, an MMORPG is more realistic in some ways, simply because of the range and numbers of PC's you will meet and interact with. It makes the environment more "alive" and definitely more challenging.

So will you have as much fun? Depends on what you find enjoyable. An MMORPG is simply a different experience than a table-top one. But role playing in that online environment is definitely both possible and enjoyable.

My friends and I have been sitting at a table for eight and half years playing Star Wars RPG. Will Star Wars Galaxies be as much fun or as stimulating as getting together on Saturday nights with your buds. As you can tell from this post I have never played an RPG online. This Star Wars Galaxies does sound very juciey.
