| Virus and Pop-up's? Oh My... posted on: 8/6/2004 9:25:43 AM I got an email today from a user stating that some of users are getting pop-ups, and virus. I am going to now share with you the same advice I shared with her.
------------------------------------------
Hi D.... (not sure the user wants me to share her name with you)
Thanks for all the kind remarks about the board and the service I try to give to our members.
You should not see any pop-ups what so ever from our site, but since we are using a third party vendor to serve ads, it has happened from time to time, but not often (very rare in fact).
I can go ahead and tell you know, that you can get pops from doing just nothing. The current site your viewing, doesn't even have to display any ads and you can still get a popup or a virus.
You can even get them from emails without noticing, or from websites without your knowledge or consent.
Here is what I suggest (I am assuming you have windows). First thing to do is to make sure that your computer is upto date with all patches, you and your members should goto http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and have your pc scaned for any updates, and then INSTALL all updates. It could take awhile if you have never done this.
After that, you should get an virus checker, and the best one I have ever found that has never prevented me from doing anything is AVG you can get that here: http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/
That url is for the free edition which is what most people use, I know there is a paid version, so you may want to check it out. I know nothing about the paid version, and have been using avg for at least a year now with no problems.
Another good program to use if you use outlook is a program that will check your email first before you even download to your pc. That program is called MailWasher and a free version but is limited to one email account. I paid the money to get the non free version which I love. It has many cool features. I have about 12 email address so I needed it for one, and on two of my emails I get between 100-1200 spam/virus emails a day, and that program is called firetrust. http://www.mailwasher.net/ http://www.firetrust.com/
By doing those 3 things, I have never had a virus, never been hacked, and my browser has never been hijacked (yes people can do that, it's happened to a friend of mine).
I just checked Firetrust's website, it might be a little confusing, if you upgrade to FireTrust, it's called Mailwasher pro and sells for $37.00 and well worth it.
I hope all this helps, and I will be reposting this message on the bug board for others to use as a reference.
-------------------------------------------
Like I said above, I have been surfing the net for many years, and I have had my up's and down, but since I started doing the above I have not had any problems. Please use this post to share advice with others of what you do to protect yourself. |

If by spyware they are talking about JoeTec.net then yes/no. JoeTec.net is a 3rd party advertising company that servers ads. Some virus checker programs will report things as spyware because ad agencies track what sites you visit so they can server better ads for you.
If JoeTec is serving an ad that has a virus, or prompts you to download a virus, then you or your members should report it to them ASAP so they can look into it.

LavaSoft AdAware, and Spybot Search and Destroy are great spyware removal tools..
and AVG is the best anti-virus i've ever used, so go along with Dann on that one.
You shouldn't be getting popups period if your using a mozilla based browser, but if you are using Internet Explorer, I recomend the google toolbar.
If you regularly run your spyware removal tools, and get a registry cleaner example: "TweakNow Powerpack 2005" and anti-viruses.... you shouldn't be experiencing popups or viruses...

^ That is the exact same virus warning that one of my members got on my board too! So is it possible that something leaked onto the main server and is being spread around to all or most of the boards now?

Nope, If you read what I put on the bug forums you will understand. All it is is a banner being displayed which is trying to install something, but as long as you have the newest IE with patches/updates your fine. On top of that, if you have a virus checker that is catching it then you are also good.

Thanks Dann- Its just really frustrating and making me mad b/c now I have lost 2 members temporarily because they cleaned up their PCs and went to other sites and they were fine and they came to my site and their PCs got all screwed up again!! Sorry but this SUX! I appreciate ALL of your help though
I will be upgrading this weekend then hopefully my board will be free and clear when I do so. Is that a probable hope that I have or just wishful thinking?

No one should be getting the virus anymore because JoeTec took care of them. If your 2 visitors cleaned up their pc's, you would think they would have upgraded to the newest version of IE which would have taken care of the problem.
