Can Spammers be stopped?

If someone spam a product on your set, let me know the name of the user and a link to where they spammed ASAP vie Private Message.

In a future planned release it will be harder for them to spam.

I guess the answer is no, but I ask the question anyway.

Yesterday my site got spammed, by someone selling something. Fortunately, I spotted it quite quickly, and banned the user from the site.

Looking at the members' list though, I see that they have posted over 1000 messages in the last few days, so it is not just my society which is involved. I assume that it will be some form of mechanised process.

So, is there any way that I can prevent this happening again, but at the same time leave my Society open for any new bona fide people to join?
