Hello all.
I need help with a project I am designing. First let me qualify myself... I am a RADAR Tech and have 5 years experience in the electronics field. I have been speciallized in RADAR theory for so long I havn't even given much thought to anything that wasn't directly related to the systems I work on, and as such have forgotten exactly how to configure, say a 555 timer, although I do have the resources to find out such things. Also I have never really designed my own circuit which creates a gap. I beleive that I know electronics but there is a big difference between identifying a faulty component and knowing when to use a 1uf cap instead of a .1uf cap. That is why I am here to seek help. Here is my project concept;

My 5-year old son is a huge Spiderman fan. I am going to make him a new headboard for his bedroom in the shape of a building. It is going to be a LARGE headboard that will attach to the wall and measures 90" x 42". I want to cut out windows that are 1"x1.5" all over. There will be 232 of them. The carpentry part will be tedious but I am patient.

In the windows I want to have LEDs to turning on and off to simulate people coming and going into the "rooms" of the building.

So my objective is this....I want between 50-232 LEDs to turn on and off randomly.

I have considered using a BCD and a 7 segment decoder to drive the lights. Instead of a 7 segment display I would use 7 LEDs placed randomly in the windows. I could cascade them to use as many as I want but I think it would look a little off if too many LEDs switched at exactly the same time. Also if I cascaded them, there would be an obvious pattern and I am afraid that it wouldn't look random enough.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Chris
