Turbo vs. Non-Turbo Oil Filter
posted on: 11/1/2005 10:51:43 AM

I am getting ready to change the oil in my 2005 PT for the second time. Based on my racing experience, I use only Wix oil filters.

My car is a non-turbo and uses a Wix #51348 filter. I noticed on the Wix application website, that the Turbo PT uses a Wix #51516.

The filters seem to be identical except that the Turbo filter is 1.424" longer. The Beta Ratios are slightly different and the Nominal Micron Rating is one point different. (What the heck is a Beta Ratio?)

Do to the fact that this filter will hold slightly more oil and has more filtering surface, I am going to buy one for this oil change and try it out.

Anybody else do this yet?

When small blcok Chevies went to spin on oil filters "way back when", we'd use a truck or Corvette filter for the same reason...they were bigger.

I went to the Wix site and printed the description of each filter. The data I posted was the only stuff that was different. I have no idea what a Beta Ratio is, but for giggles, I may call Wix and ask them. I guess the micron stuff is how small of particles the filter will stop.

You're right...it's a road car! Sure is fun posting this stuff though! Beta Ratio...hmmmm???

By the way, Carquest filters are made by Wix. The part numers start with an "85" rather than a "51", but he last 3 digits match the Wix number. So a #85516 is a Turbo PT filter.
