Bought a breaker bar and a 3/4 socket for the lug nuts on the cruiser. After what happened with Bill's flat I figured it would be worth it. The breaker bar and socket fit into the pouch that the tire lug wrench and jack are in...it also slides right back into the compartment with no problem........about 40 dollars in Sears....

Nipper, that's a great suggestion!

I should really get one myself. It's those types of things that to me. Flat tire and the spare if flat as well. lol

I might even pick up one of those car air compressors too, just to be on the safe side!

Yes, Bill's might have been 3/4" because he has aftermarket rims. Better check to make sure that socket fits a stock PT wheel. like posted, it might be 19mm metric.

If the wheels have been tighten to specs with a torque wrench, you will be able to get the lugs off. Unfortunately, the guys in most tire places just hammer them on with an air impact wrench and they are usually set to about 225 FtLbs. Specs for the PT are like 80-90 FtLbs.

I used a 3/4 socket on my lugs on both cars and they fit, I am also going to try a 19mm to see if that fits tighter, but I did fit the 3/4 before I bought it.

That's good Nipper. Let us know which one fits better.

Just went into the garage and checked the 19mm and that seems to fit just like the 3/4.. but I suggest you check you own lug nuts in case u have special lugs or fancy lugs on your car.

FYI, I bought a 1/2 inch breaker bar and 1/2 socket, seemed to be much bigger than the 3/8's.....

The lugs were stock , 3/4 inch for 16 inch wheels, but yes the bar is the right thing to do

19mm = .748", So a 3/4" socket would be a hair larger but like the 13mm and 1/2" sockets are interchangable, so are the 19mm and 3/4".
The best thing to have is a 1/2" drive "clicker" type torque wrench. You can get them from places like Harbor Freight for under $20 on sale and leave it set at 100 ft lbs for the PT's lug nuts.

The deal with the breaker bar is to LOOSEN the lugs not tighten them, they were on so tight for some unknown reason that we could not break them loose...We understand that the lugs should be tightened with the tork wrench, but the problem seems to be that they become locked on either from use of an air gun or from driving.

They become locked on from using an air gun, (anyone old enough to remember when cars had right hand threaded lugs on the passaenger side and left handed threads on the drivers side?). They did that so the rotation of the wheels would always favor the lugs being tight. There was a "L" stamped on the end of the lugs to tell you it was different. When I was a kid working in the gas stations, I had to change a lot of broken off wheel lugs from people going the wrong way. The left handed lugs were actually softer than the right so they would sheer off if some knucklehead went the wrong way so that they would snap off rather than jam the wheel on forever!

If you torque the lugs to 100 ftlbs, they will stay there. I believe the "official" wheel lug specs for Chryslers is 80 ftlbs but like John, I have my torque wrench set on 100ftlbs. We use that setting for all our family cars and the race car as well.

You know what is going to happen? At the next show we willhave 12 people with breaker bars and somebody will get a dead battery and nobody will have jumper cables

Believe or not John, I do remember the lugs being like that. I don't have the problem with the air/impact guns, because with my rims I can't use an impact gun. They have to be tightened with a bar and a thin wall socket. According to American Racing they did it as a security feature on the rims. So if I don't have my bar and thin walled socket with me at all times I am screwed.

when i had the flat fixed in the wife's car, i told the guy at bj's to use the torque wrench on the wall not the impact gun. he looked at me like i was retarded, so i walked him over showed him the one for 100lbs. and said here ya go now use this till it clicks. and to think he works in a tire center? good thing i change my own oil.....my luck i'd have sears jiffy looking under the back of the car for the filter.
