I'm pretty happy with my TomTom 920, I got it for the widescreen and I wanted the Euro as well as US maps.

My wife has a Garmin 260, she wanted something smaller & more portable - no problems with that either. Check out gpsreview, there are unbiased reviews as well as active user forums.

I use a Garmin Street Pilot C330 and it is great. The newer units are called the Nuvi. I bought a Nuvi 200W for my son for Christmas and he likes it. The higher (priced) models have more features like text-to-speech and bluetooth. I am content to have my GPS tell me when to turn right and left, I don't necessarily need it to give the street names as they are shown on the screen.

I am a real newbie concerning these "things", but it sounds better than having Mapquest lose you on streets that are under construction. Since I've read in the news that they are the most frequently stolen item at the moment, how easy are they to install, uninstall and then reinstall? That sure was a heck of a sentence!

Suction Cup mount for the windshield and cig lighter plug. You can put it on in 10 seconds and remove it in 10 seconds and lock it up in your glove box. People tend to get lazy and leave them up on the dash, inviting a smash and grab.

Thanks for the information everyone. Now for the big question, if you know a shortcut and don't follow all of its directions, does it talk back to you and call you names?

I use a vent mount in both our PTs, the reason being it keeps the gps from blocking any of the window. Regarding theft, yes they're very popular at the moment so it's important to remove any evidence a gps is used in the vehicle.

The vent mounts are very easy to unclip from the vent and throw the mount in the glovebox and the gps in a jacket pocket. One thing to keep in mind with a window mount is to clean the window after you remove the mount - I've read stories where thieves only need to see the ring on the window where the mount was to give them a clue there might be something in the car.

LOL! AFAIK all of the popular models will automatically recalculate the route for you - both models we have will do this with no problem.

Like Mark said, most will pick up from where you are and re-calculate. Some of the earlier units (especially some of the "built into the radio units)insisted that you go back to your original route (make a U Turn) but now they are smarter.

Mark,

Is the vent mount a special accessory you need to buy or is it something that comes in the box with the unit?

It is not included with the Garmins or XOGs (Lowrance) but seems to come with Mark's Tom Tom. May be optional on some of the other brands. The only thing I do not like about vent mounts is that during the winter, you are blasting hot air on the back of the unit and in the summer, the unit is blocking my cold air from the Air Conditioning.

In both cases it was a separate accessory. Both the TomTom and Garmin came with a window mount. I got the vent mounts from MountGuys. Very reasonably priced, and they're in NJ so it only took a day for shipping.

By the way, regarding the vents - the PT of course has vents that can be turned off individually so when the gps is in place, the vent is off. I've not found it to be a problem to have one vent turned off.
