Switching to synthetic oil
posted on: 6/26/2008 7:40:25 PM

I welcome all views and opinions on the pros and cons of arbitrarily switching to synthetic oil after running conventional oil since day one. My '02 just turned 76k and I felt maybe it was time for a little extra protection.

regards,
Pete

I have run Mobil 1 in my PT since it had 3,000 miles. I figure in the long run it is cheaper than putting in a new motor. Using it in the new Nitro as well. If you have been changing your oil regularly all the time, I would not hesitate to change. You might even see a slight increase in mileage.

Pete and John,

I have a friend that is running the synth oil in his Jeep. He said the engine runs better with it then the standard oil, but yet the dealer, (I know, I know, they're the dealer so...), anyway the said I should not change over.

There was also a lot of discussion on this topic on the PT Cruiser World site before it was taken down. And no one could find anything wrong after they changed over. So why would the dealer advise against it?

Thanks guys. I didn't think it was a big deal to begin with but I always welcome second opinions. I think I'm gonna give it a try next oil change.

When synthetic oils first came out, people were changing over in engines with poor service records and many miles. These old engines had a lot of gunk built up around the engine seals and that would make the seals get hot and very hard. When you put in synthetic oil, it would soften up the gunk and flush it away and then the synthetic oil, being thinner than conventional oils, would leak out of the seals. Now the seals are better and this does not seem to be an issue. Engines that have had synthetic oils since they were built never had this problem.

Thanks John for this info.

I just did understand why the dealer said I shouldn't switch over...I mean they did say that the owner manual said to only use what the manual recommends.
