| Librarian Quote | Reply | | Simplicity & Tradition posted on: 8/24/2003 10:31:31 PM Just for the time it takes to read this, i ask you to step back and take a breath. i ask you to turn off the television and radio with their constant declarations that you need something "new and improved", "faster", "easier", " or that you must "think outside the box" or "dare to be different" or "live on the edge". Just let there be quiet a moment while together we contemplate the Gorean. Simplicity & Tradition Life on Gor was beautiful in its simplicity. Goreans had access to energy bulbs, but preferred the warmth and "aliveness" of flame for lighting. Lamps, torches, candles. Simplicity. There were excellent craftsmen on Gor and no shortage of materials to make an abundance of things - chairs for everyone if they so wished. But they did not. They preferred to simply seat themselves upon the floor. Most quarters were decorated and furnished quite simply. Not crammed with junk in every closet and drawer and overflowing on tables and shelves. Just simplicity. Meals for most all of Gor were quite simple. They had the ingredients to make all sorts of fanciful dishes we here on earth can't seem to live without - but for the most part they preferred their simple meals. There was pride in craftsmanship. Pride in doing a thing well. Roads, built to last generations and generations with nothing more than carefully chosen, carved, and placed blocks of stone. The work day was 10 ahn, but taking a couple of ahn off in the afternoon to spend time with the guys at the paga tavern was often part of the deal. It was not unusual for Goreans to close up shop early just to stand on the bridges and enjoy a particularly beautiful sunset. The caste system and social structure on Gor provided simplicity. Each person was born to a place on Gor. Raised from birth to take his or her place in society without the anguish of wondering what to do with their lives. And society knew what it could, and could not, expect from a person based on his place in the sceme of things. Simplicity. Tonight, dine by candlelight and relish in the simplicty and warmth of the glow. |
