Women of the Warrior Caste
replied on: 1/11/2004 11:18:00 AM

There is a belief among many online that women of the caste of warriors would be more handy with weapons, perhaps a bit tougher and stronger as well, due to the influence of being raised in a household and atmosphere full of warriors.

She, the young lady born to the caste, watches the weapons training and practice sessions - maybe even gets a few lessons personally in less wieldy weapons - or so the online line of thinking goes.

But what we find in the books is quite different.

quote:

'I'm sorry about your father,' I said.

'He was a Ubar of Ubars,' she said. She hesitated for a moment. 'The life of a Ubar is uncertain.' She gazed thoughtfully at the grass. 'He must have known it would
happen sometime.'

'Did he speak to you about it?' I asked.

She tossed her head back and laughed. 'Are you of Gor or not? I have never seen my father except on the days of public festivals. High Caste daughters in Ar are raised in the Walled Gardens, like flowers, until some highborn suitor, preferably a Ubar or Administrator, will pay the bride price set by their fathers.'

'You mean you never knew your father?' I asked.

'Is it different in your city, Warrior?'

'Yes,' I said, remembering that in Ko-ro-ba, primitive though it was, the family was respected and maintained. I then wondered if that might be due to the influence of my father, whose Earth ways sometimes seemed at variance with the rude customs of Gor.
- Tarnsman

Here, right off in the first book written of Gor, Tarnsman, we learn much from Talena, the daughter of Marlenus, Ubar of the city of Ar.

She speaks of High Caste daughters being raised in walled gardens, waiting for suitors to pay the bride price.

Note, she states "High Caste" daughters and not "Ubar's" daughters. High Castes being Scribes, Physicians, Builders AND Warriors.

She speaks of never seeing her father except at public festivals.
