Women of the Warrior Caste
replied on: 1/11/2004 11:38:47 AM We might have been picturing young girls and ladies in pigtails hanging around the training grounds but it just does not appear to be so. And what of Ko-ro-ba? This place that is less strict on the movements of women than most all other cities on Gor (save Tharna pre-revolution)? Still we do not have evidence of women even observing the training and thus becoming familiar with the workings of weapon handling. In fact, we do have a glimpse that would tell us otherwise. Here, Tarl has been in Ko-ro-ba going through rigorous training to be a Warrior - both physical weapons training and education of higher knowledge. He has been training among the Warriors for weeks. quote: He states that he had seen few women in those weeks. But what about the concerned Daddy who wants to make sure his lil angel can fend for herself on this big harsh planet? Wouldn't he teach her a few things? i do not think so. In the mindset of the Gorean man as i understand it, he would take pride in *his* responsibility and ability to keep her safe until she is companioned. That is his duty. To teach her defense and weapons is to imply that he is not up to the task. Not able to do what all of Gorean society expects him to do. Few men would take that mindset. Further, as companionships on Gor are by far a union arranged by the father, AND unions arranged within the same caste, HE would know that her future companion would take his place in protecting the young lady - simply because he knows well the codes the man was raised in. |

Women of the Warrior Caste
replied on: 1/11/2004 11:24:13 AM One might argue that since Talena says "High Caste daughters in Ar...." that this is only the way it would be in Ar and not anywhere else on the planet of Gor. However, we have several quotes about the free women of MOST cities being confined to their quarters. quote: quote: Here, speaking again of Ko-ro-ba... quote: |

Women of the Warrior Caste
replied on: 1/11/2004 11:18:00 AM There is a belief among many online that women of the caste of warriors would be more handy with weapons, perhaps a bit tougher and stronger as well, due to the influence of being raised in a household and atmosphere full of warriors. She, the young lady born to the caste, watches the weapons training and practice sessions - maybe even gets a few lessons personally in less wieldy weapons - or so the online line of thinking goes. But what we find in the books is quite different. quote: Here, right off in the first book written of Gor, Tarnsman, we learn much from Talena, the daughter of Marlenus, Ubar of the city of Ar. She speaks of High Caste daughters being raised in walled gardens, waiting for suitors to pay the bride price. Note, she states "High Caste" daughters and not "Ubar's" daughters. High Castes being Scribes, Physicians, Builders AND Warriors. She speaks of never seeing her father except at public festivals. |
