I have found family links for my research but also a fascinating collection of notes - I would recommend a visit to view them (they are indexed and the Library staff are really helpful) just 'phone and book a microfilm reader!! Letter from Samuel Bunting to Charles Kerry
replied on: 6/26/2003 6:48:36 PM Details of some of Barbara's Research into the Charles Kerry documents are below: I have been researching the Bunting Family for my cousin. Samuel Bunting went to Auckland in 1852 and is mentioned in Rev Kerry's Book. I have transcribed a letter so far which I is below. Samuel Bunting was said to have married a 'Carrington' but I have yet to establish when/where, the letter gives details of their family. I have made some notes from the microfilm held at Derby Local Studies. Letter from Samuel Bunting to Rev. Charles Kerry – note at top of letter ‘Sam Bunting left Smalley for New Zealand in 1852 as this letter states’ Amy Street Grahamstown Auckland N Z 17/12/77 Revd Dear Sir Your letter of 22nd June last came duly to hand. I feel greatly obliged for your kindness in writing me and for the trouble you have taken in giving me the information your letter contains respecting the worthies of the district I can see that death has been very busy with them since I left the old country but this is not to be wondered at seeing that a good many of them were old people when I left home. You father must be looking very old now it is now 25 years since I last saw him and I expect that time has wrought great change on him it is even beginning to tell upon me in fact I don’t feel the man now that I was a year or two ago. Since receiving your letter I received one from my sister Ann and another from my sister Hannah in Nottingham they don’t seem to be overburdened with this worlds gear more than myself. You state in your letter that you wish me to send more information about myself. Well about this I hardly know what to say I don’t suppose I am any richer now than if I had never left England but if I don’t reap any benefit myself my family will always have reason to bless themselves for the change, for this is a much better country for hard working people than poor old England. I don’t know whether I mentioned in my last what family I have my eldest son William is now 24 years old he is working along with me on a farm . We are generally working at contract work and our wages vary greatly. My second son Charles Kerry is at work in a place called Waitekauri in a quartz crushing machine he is now 20 years old and receives £2 - 2/ per week the next on the list is Myra a girl of 12 years old and just going to school. Kate is 10 years old likewise going to school. The next Henry Robert 5 years old I believe will be a cripple for life he was seized when a year & seven months old with inflammation on the spine and has never been right since. Mary Beatrice next on the list is two years & eight months & the last Violet Jane is a nice girl 1 year & four months. This is all that is left of a family of fifteen. I think this is all that I can think of worth repeating for the present. I shall always be glad to hear from you with any news that you might think interesting. Will you please remember to your father and any others that you may meet to whom the knowledge of my existence might prove interesting with best wishes for your welfare both in this world and that which is to come (?)---- me to be Revd Dear Sir Yours mo respectfully S Bunting Notes added at the bottom of the letter To the Revd Charles Kerry from Saml Bunting Samuel Bunting the son of William & Mirah was born at Smalley Wood (Bunting-house) 15 May 1825 & Baptized Aug. 22. 1830 by Rev S. replied on: 6/26/2003 6:52:19 PM Further e-mail from Barbara on the Rev. Kerry: I also transcribed these notes from the beginning of the Register of Baptisms and Pedigrees. There is an index which accompanies the microfilms and the staff at Derby Local Studies are very helpful. The staff at Heanor Library are equally helpful and I have used 2 volumes about Smalley written by Rev. Kerry. They also have the Census on microfilm. (You probably are already aware of this!!) I think the attached notes are very moving and well worth reading apart from any other info. which may be discovered. I have been able to photocopy the Bunting Family Tree which has confirmed information so far collected and clues for further research - needess to say anyone with Bunting links in Smalley would be an interesting contact. Memorandum In the year 1860 I made a genealogical ‘Visitation’ of Smalley almost from house to house carefully examining records in family Bibles and other books & papers. None of the notes in this register have been made on supposition. In these collections I was materially assisted by my dear father Samuel Kerry who never resided out of the parish for the long period of 82 years and by the united testimony of many of the oldest inhabitants. The result of my labours will be found in a large volume of Smalley Genealogies and Pedigrees now in the possession of my cousin John Walker of Field House, Uttoxeter Old Road, Derby. (Signed) Charles Kerry Late Rector of Upper Stondon Beds October 1900 Baptisms 1813 to 1854 Additional notes I purchased this volume with three other vols, all Registers of Smalley, from the Rev. Chas Kerry, Sept. 1902 (Signed) H.H. Bemrose (Reference MSS 4708 – Derby Local Studies Library) These Pedigrees were compiled by the Rev. Charles Kerry a native of Smalley Co. Derby for the most part from living authorities but verified and augmented from various parish registers and family memoranda. Nothing has been inserted without confirmation, so that these records of families as far as they go, may be absolutely relied upon. I write this in 1901, though for the most part the village pedigrees were completed before the year1860: continuations have been added as the opportunity has served ever since. I am now ill, and as far as I can see never likely to proceed much further with this work, and, having no children of my own, I earnestly entreat that this record may be most sacredly preserved, carefully handled, and never allowed to go out of good keeping, considering the great labour which it entailed on the Revd Charles Kerry. …………………………………………………………………………………. Frequent reference is made in this volume 6 to my other folio MSS. These folios twenty one in number were all sold by me to Sir Henry H.
