Almost all locals have always talked about "Langley Mill and Aldercar," and still do. But the official name of the parish is now "Aldercar and Langley Mill," something which is reflected on all the road signs, etc. Does anyone know when this change happened, and, more to the point, why? |

replied on: 1/1/2005 12:45:48 PM Maybe locals always refer to Langley Mill and Aldercar-because that was the name of the Co-op, but my mum lived at Aldercar from 1920's to 1940's and her address was always written as Aldercar, Langley Mill Notts. So it is still a mystery!!!!!! |

replied on: 1/1/2005 1:14:05 PM I too lived in Aldercar (my birthplace in my passport is recorded as Aldercar as well), and the address was likewise "Aldercar, Langley Mill". This implies that Langley Mill was bigger or more important than Aldercar - which, let's face it, it was. So, logically, it really should be Langley Mill and Aldercar, rather than Aldercar and Langley Mill |

replied on: 1/26/2006 12:03:27 PM I was talking to a councillor on the Aldercar & Langley Mill Parish Council this morning. He has been told that the order of the two place names was decided upon as Aldercar is an ancient place name, whereas Langley Mill, as a name, hasn't been around for much more than 150 years. |

The only thing that springs to mind is the railway crossing gates just before the Durham Ox, which many people seem to regard as being the start of Aldercar. As for the picnic at Aldercar Farm. Most Sunday Schools did this - there would be an afternoon event at a farmer's field - different churches would make arrangements with different farmers. Are you sure it was Wakes Monday (which I think was in August, but I stand to be corrected), as I thought they were more commonly held on Whit Monday. Thanks for all your help on Chapels of late - it gets very confusing!! |
