The Watson Memorial, Heanor Church
posted on: 10/11/2003 9:48:02 PM

The Watson Memorial was rededicated on 9 May 2003, at a service attended by the Duke of Devonshire, after several years of fund-raising by the Heanor & District Local History Society and others.

Samuel Watson was born in Heanor in 1662, and was later the principal carver at Chatsworth House, Derbyshire. He died in 1715, and was buried at Heanor Church.

The memorial was taken down in 1981/2, when the church was rebuilt, and it needed substantial restoration before it was in a fit state to be placed back into the church.

The inscription reads:

Watfon is gone
whofe skilfull Art difplay'd,
To the very Life,
Wh'ever Nature made
View but his wondrous works
in Chadfworth Hall
Which are so gaiz'd at,
And Admir'd by all.
Youl say tis pitty,
He fhould hidden lye;
And nothing faid,
T'revive his Memory.

My mournfull friends forbear yr tears,
For I fhall rife wn Christ appears
This Sam Watson died Mar 29 1715
Aged 53 years.
His wife died Sep 25 1739

RMMee,

I've uncovered some copies of the restoration documentation - though I beleive the society got a copy?

The bulk of it is technical jargon about what they did - I think mainly for the future so that people knew what they had done to the memorial for any future restoration.

Part of the report gives photos of the restoration, the memorial pre restoration, with them knocking holes in the church wall (yikes!) and with the memorial being put back together, do you want me to e-mail you copies of the photos?
