Another shop on the Market comes to mind. Frank Severn cabinet maker and high class joiner. He used to go round on an old bike collecting his dues.
It was on the south side near the old Post Office. I think later on it became something to do with pensions.

Also, not forgetting the old Firestation, which was situated across the road from the Cozy Cinema and adjacent to the Technical College's playground.
I can remember seeing the crew washing and polishing the 'Engine' on numerous occasions and inside the small room, it always looked (mostly) clean and spotless, till the washing down times.

We can always hope that the old fire station will be used by us as the new Heritage Centre. We've been working with the town council for a number of years on this project, and, who knows, 2005/6 may see some developments!!!?!

There was also that comforting 'department', where after a quaff or two at the Ray's Arm, Market Hotel Etc. you usually found yourself heading instinctively to at a great pace, namely the old, Council-run toilets, situated next to the old Firestation. Facing it head on, the women's entrance was on the right, men on the left.
For its time, those combined toilets were worthy of being the pride of the Town. They were, in the main, clean and spotless, with ample space. It was a sad day when their French? replacement box/cubicle/wotzit appeared across the other side of the Market-place. What a diabolical replacement. But, that's privatisation.

The day those old toilets vanished from the scene, was the beginning of the end for old Heanor - knock this down, build that instead and so on and on..............

This post is just to get the thread back to the top of the list, in view of the similar subject matter to "Heanor Shops"

the direct discount or krackers ? as you say suzard was a co-op shop, but i always have it in my mind that it was a grocers shop, but also in the heanor shop thread there is an hint of the co-op being round the corner onto godfrey st.that will be where logic is now and they also had a shop across the road where you caught the barton bus to derby.

On the corner opposite the church was Coop mens tailoring (50's, 60's)-Ken Marson was manager there for a while-before the shop became what it is now (a year or two ago) it was a small coop grocery supermarket.

Ripley and Heanor january 12th 1968
"Heanor Rotary Club will open an Open Bazaar Bring and Buy shop at Heanor market Place Coop shop from Feb 8th to Feb 17th
Total proceeds for the Cheshire Homes Fund"
Wonder if this about the time the Coop tailoring closed and before the Coop supermarket opened there?

Ripley and Heanor Sept 18th 1959
"Touch of genius! Bush button channel change TV.You can buy or rent one of these superb sets from HALLS, Market Place Heanor. Rental terms from 7/6 per week including free tubes, valves, service"

I remember Halls-a few doors away from the Chip Shop (Hunts-then Crest of the Wave. Halls had a big doorway you could take shelter from the elements in while you awaited the arrival of a friend who would get off the bus at the stop opposite and across the Market Place.

We must never lose sight of the fact that both Langley Mill & Aldercar Co-op and Ripley Co-op both had premises on Heanor Market Place. It gets confusing doesn't it!!!

Absolutely. The Ripley Co-op had premises on the back of the Market Place (somewhere near Barclays) and also, I think, on Godfrey Street, where the Police Station now is.
