I remember the shop on Ebenezar St in late 50's early 60's yes the penny ice lollies with the stick almost diagonal through it,they also sold fags singly with a match for each, not that I bought any of course. There was a small shop across the road from Aldercar infants, you could buy Wagon Wheels sold in a paper bag,not a bit like the things you get from Tesco's.
By the way I don't know if its been mentioned before but who recalls their Mum's Co-oP dividend number, god help you if you came back from the shops without the cheque, ours was 13207

There was a Mrs Stanway who was a corsetiere on Elnor Street. Wonder if she was related to Stanway the jewellers on Cromford Road.

I'm conscious that the discussions on shops, both in this forum and in the Heanor Forum, tend to date back to the 60's and earlier. What about other shop names that have come since then and have now departed?

In the 70's, on Station Road, between Wesley Street and Elnor Street, we had:

The Fruit Bowl, run by Ian Stokes.
Taylor's the Chemists
a Chinese Takeaway - not sure of the name.
Sutcliffe's Newsagents.

Can anyone else add to this era?

That's good, Sue. Let's try and work out a bit more about some of these....

W. Sutcliffe remained in business for donkey's years (handing over to his son at some time). They were opposite the end of Elnor Street.

Joseph Pye was at the junction of Station Road and North Street.

K. Holford will have been the shop on Ebenezer Street which had the jitty at the side of it running down to the junior school.

Maxfield's Chemists subsequently became Taylor's Chemists, opposite the Railway Tavern.

That's about all I can comment on.

Nice one, Peter.
JOE PYES has now been turned into flats.
NELLIE OUTRAMS was opp the (at one time) Pottery, near the bus stop- we called that bus stop "Pottery Lane" stop, but many called the stop "Nellie Outram's"-even the bus conductors referred to it as this.
HOLFORDS was (unofficially) the school tuck shop for Langley Mill Girls-they made their own "penny ice lollies"-frozen Vimto on a stick!
MAXFIELDS is now SHEPPARDS upholstery. I remember who I always thought was Mrs Maxfield-a dark haired lady always wearing an immaculate white overall/coat. They used to have small bowls in the shop window filled with all kinds of dried /ground herbs-each one labelled with a handwritten card telling you what they were-fascinating-well to me at least!
W. PHILLIPS was next to Marshalls cafe-now all demolished, then on the Croft,(site of Teathers Chip shop)-now part of a car park-then corner of Bridge St-now the premises have been turned into flats.
It was run by Billy Phillips and then his son Billy-and changed from radio etc to a bicycle shop,
JIM HEATHS garage became SHILLING AND BRIDGE-still a garage today, can't remember what it is called.
GEORGE HOLBROOK stone mason Upper Dunsted Rd-I remember that-a house with various headstones etc on display in the front garden-you could choose your headstone on the walk up to Aldercar cemetery!!!!!

Hello Suzard,

Harry Davis was my mother's uncle, so I was thrilled to hear that an advertisement for his shop still exists. I have sent 2 photographs of his shop to Robert. Do you know where I could see a copy of this advertisement, it would be lovely to add this information to my family history.

Regards
Sue
