PIPERS BAKERY -established in Langley Mill in 1884.They had shops in langley Mill, Heanor and Eastwood. The Eastwood shop was owned by Alf Piper and his wife. Alf used to drive the delivery van between the bakery at langley Mill and the shops at Heanor and Eastwood. The van was pulled by "Tommy",a horse who was stabled at langley Mill behind what was later known as Marshalls Cafe and Shop on Station Rd langley Mill

I've just had a query from the great-grandson of the founder of Pipers. Does anyone have any photos?

Sue

Which book is that in. (Don't tell me it's one of ours - I really must do an index to photos which we have published in book form some time.)

Harry Davis was my mother's uncle. I have sent 2 photographs of his shop to Robert.

Here's one of the photos Sue sent - it seems that her uncle was celebrating the 1953 Coronation.

Yes, its Station Road. I think this building was knocked down to make a small supermarket (originally Co-op?)

... who remembers Mrs Hunts shop on Dunstead Road....? we used to nip over her back yard, nick the empty pop bottles out of the return crates and take them round the front to claim the 1p return!! ....the best of it was her son was in on it!! Steven gave up this life of high crime and is apparently in the management ranks of the Derbys Fire Brigade...

I heard old Ma Hunt passed away... bless her!

What was the other geezers name in the shop in the middle of Dunstead - circa mid '70s ... i'm sure it was Peter something, had a couple of sons that went to aldercar school..

(disclaimer: the author of this article denies any association with any criminal activity relating to the crimes in said article and will deny any association with the crime or any association with it... whatsoever... for ever and ever, amen... and anyway my fingerprints will be off the pop bottles by now anyway m'lord... ;-)

WILLIAM PHILLIPS radio shop during the war

From " Days that Used to be - Memories of Langley Mill
by BARRIE SMITH 1969

"Whilst the war progresses, one man in Langley Mill was assigned by the British Secret Service to carry out the nightly secret task of intercepting enemy messages and passing on information by wireless to the British Secret Service HQ.
Mr William Phillips, who was propieter of the Radio Shop at langley Mill, opposite the Midland Hotel, carried out his task in a small lean to shed adjoining the shop. It was not until after the war that Bill's great part was made known.
Visiting the shop one day, I happened to see displayed a certificate from the British Secret Service thanking him for his valuable service.
As I write Mr Phillips has for many years passed on and workmen are demolishing the shop, which I feel could relate some very interesting and valuable stories of the war years."

I assume this was during WW2.

Robert, first of all,I've registered only yesterday. Credit to you all for a fantastic site.I lived in Thompson Street, until moving to Derby in 1960 and remember Harry Davis's shop's very well. The picture on Station Road is certainly Harry's shop.I think the decorative carving to the left was the Co-op butchers. His shop in North Street was opposite the Gasworks,in between West Street and Orchard Street. My father used to take him to the wholesale market very early mornings to buy mainly fruit.A lady used to serve in the North Street shop, maybe his sister? On the other side of that entrance was an hairdressers shop, Mr.Carver who lived at the top of Thompson Street,he also had another barber,Mick Reilly, working with him.
Next door was Morleys Grocers before getting to the Erewash Hotel, on the corner of North Street. On the opposite corner was Joe Pyes off licence.
