Paul

Thanks for the excellent run through of local shops, and welsome to the site.

A quick question about Limbs - you say it became Williamsons - did it then become Sandersons (which is what I remember it as)? Can you give any years for the changes?

Again, welcome, and I hope you have an interesting and active time here.

Has anyone mentioned Mabels (Im sure that was the name) The shop on the corner of Gladstone street and Cromford road. I remember toys and sweets, but I think she sold quite a range, mainly food. If I went straight to my grandmas after school my aunt was sure to go to Mabels for cakes when she came home from Aristoc, never failed. A similar shop Bessy's, on Dunstead road Aldercar 1950's/60's, her husband was a driving instructor. I think they took over a pub in Eastwood. Mrs Hunt took the shop in Aldercar, I think her husband was a butcher Ripley way.

Robert
Yes it did become Sandersons, but I'm not clear about the changeover dates. I delivered papers for Williamsons in 1954/55.
my round consisted of Cromford Road onto Plumtree Terrace then up to Aldercar Church onto Woodlinkin, my last paper finishing opposite Ormonde Golf course. Sorry I Can't help with the dates.
Another couple of shop's I missed was Arthur Townsend,Greengrocer. on the corner of West Street and North Street. does anyone remember the sweet shop on the corner of Ormonde Street opposite the Gasworks entrance? or the chip shop in Ebenezer Street.

I remember the sweet shop on the corner of North Street and Orchard Street - that was running quite a bit later.

I know there was a shop on Ebenezer Street, next to the jitty that went down to the school, but don't recall a chip shop anywhere there. Whereabouts was it?

PaulR,The newspaper shop on Cromford Road (which we always referred to as "Limbs", was run by the Williamsons until about 1962-they had a son Ivan who went to HGS in 1959 and left the area when he was in 2nd/3rd year. Then Sandersons took over and Mr Sanderson eventually handed over the reins to son Phillip.
Arthur Townsend for many yrars had a mobile shop-he used to sell from a "shooting brake"-he lived on Dunstead Road-had one daughter, Elaine, and moved into the shop early 60s. He had served in the forces in foreign parts and had an impressive collection of beautifully coloured sea shells whoch he housed in wooden cases- his "treasures" from his time spent in foreign parts.
Robert, I can't recall the chip shop on Ebenezar st -I remember the shop next to the school jitty-and their home made penny ice lollies.

After a chat with my mother she remembers a chippy half way up ebenezer street (were she still lives) it was on the same side of the street as the other shops.Located across the road from where aristoc stood in a garage which is now owned by Mr Morgan who,If my memory is correct was the proprietor of a Hardwear store (early 1980's I think) on cromford rd situated in what is now the Mehran restaurant.

Robert.
The chippy was a fairly big wooden shed on the left hand side going up from North Street somewhere round about No.30 opposite the gates into Aristoc.I think a family named Reeves lived next door,I used to go to Langley Mill Boys School with a Peter Reeves,he also had a sister Beryl. The shop further up next to the entrance to the Girls School was Mrs.Holfords.
PaulR

Suz. you've brought memories back about Arthur Townsend's shooting brake, did'nt they
live about half-way across Upper Dunstead?on the left hand side.

Paul, that's where they lived. I had my first taste of Lucozade at their house! Their daughter didn't like tea, so had Lucozade instead, so when I visited I had the same-served in a wine glass! Very "upmarket"-or so I thought!

Russ/Paul

Can I just confirm that the chip shop was in the very large wooden garage, towards the bottom end of Ebenezer Street, which later became the garage of Harold Morgan the plumber (who lived in quite a large house on the street)? I never knew that!

I remember the Morgan's quite well. My brother was apprenticed to Mr Morgan for a short while (before giving up plumbing!), and I also remember them taking over the old Co-op Painting and Decorating shop, now the Indian Restaurnat, which they set up as a DIY shop. They definitely had the shop no later than 1981, as I remember spending a lot of time in there, having just bought my first house. Guess where - Ebenezer Street!

I've just had a chat with my sister Beryl, she remembers the chip shop in Ebenezer Street it was "EYRES" she also worked in despatch at Aristoc 1966 with Mr.Holford who owned the shop at the side of the jitty to the girls school, his wife used to run the shop and when they sold it they moved to Nottingham somewhere near to the City Hospital.
Does anyone remember a sweet shop halfway up Sedgwick Street on the right-hand side?

Been to Langley Mill today to have a look at Ebenezer Street, although Aristoc's site is now all new houses,it still brought back a lot of memories.I got it wrong about the wooden shed, this shed, which was used for making the chips in, was at the back of the original building which is still there today, except for the double doors, and it's more likely to be round about No.4 or 5.Holfords was no.41 and has been converted back into a house.

Robert. I think my sister may have got it mixed up with Morris's in Peel Street. Some more from the 50's.
I know Smithsons chemist's at the bottom of Dunstead have been mentioned, coming back towards the church. There was a piece of waste land, which is now built up, followed by Pidd's decorators, which was then Les.Riley's, before becoming Classic Design.Next door was Drapers confectioners where we used to get our sherbut dips and chewing wood from before going across the crossing to school.Next was Archie Fogg's Garage, then Don Lockwoods Butchers on the corner of Peel Street.Moving further up Station Road I seem to remember either one or two shops opposite the Working Men's Club one of them may have been a greengrocers "Calladines"? And now coming back to that lovely photo of Harry Davis's, I think it can easily be confused with the Chinese Takeaway with the entries being very similar, the difference is, the arch in the photo is smaller than the one next to the takeaway. I'm fairly certain that "The Pantry" was Morleys Grocers and the "Tanning Shop" was Carvers hairdressers, I remember the takeaway being toys & fancy goods.
Can anyone remember another chip shop Jack Whartons, just round the corner on Cromford Road at Aldercar opposite Aldercar Infants.
