replied on: 4/9/2005 11:17:12 AM When did you last use the word "podged" as in "I am podged after eating all me dinner". One that the old man used was "there's more ways of killing a pig than by stuffing it with strawberries." He was born and bred in Langley Mill. He was an indentured wagon builder at G R Turners and just completed his apprenticeship when he got involved in an international falling out over one thing and another. That was some time in 1942 after an arguement with his foreman. regards Phil |

replied on: 4/9/2005 2:24:23 PM I use the term "podged" frequently - with just that meaning. Funnily, till now, I hadn't even considered it as being a local word. |

replied on: 4/9/2005 6:34:17 PM Savoury Ducks, Robert. It's all 'Faggots' today. A faggot, surely, IS a small piece of burning wood, helpful for keeping camp-fires burning? Azzabuv. |

replied on: 4/24/2005 9:07:46 PM The gadder, the best ones were made with two clothes pegs bound together in a tight vee. The propulsion was provided by 18 inchs of 1/4 inch square elastic from the model shop near the top of Derby Road. The ammunition holder was a tongue from an old shoe or even better an old boot. The ammunition was usually smooth pebbles or the ball from a bearing. Washers or round blanks were used if you knew where to get them from. I never mastered the art of gadder making and firing. My efforts were usually frustrated by the lack of cash for the all important elastic. Jitty is used around the Mansfield area along with jennel. To coin a phrase you get a right hodge podge of regional words in the mining communities, as were, from the people migrated around by the NCB. regards phil |

replied on: 5/14/2005 3:17:20 PM Being out of the local area I've not used this very often for some time. The word "scrattin" as in "what are you scrattin about at ?" Usually used when someone is rummaging around looking for a well hidden item. regards Phil |

replied on: 5/23/2005 2:37:29 PM While I still have it in the active brain cell, the humble "guzzgog". Known to the rest of the world as the small green hairy fruit with the name of gooseberry. Another one is "corran" for currant, as in black/red corran bush regards Phil |
