replied on: 12/29/2003 12:21:23 AM Sharon Haven't got time to give you the fullest reply tonight, but.... Sarah Lee was at Heanor Court on 31/10/22, and at Derby Assizes on 10/11/22. While I can't help you regarding the actual trial records, murders tended to get fully reported on, so if you know the dates of the court appearances, it shouldn't be too hard to get - all old local newspapers can be seen on microfilm/fiche at the local studies library at Derby or Matlock. What I have seen, and have got a transcript of, which I will type out for you when I have a little more time (though it's only half a page at most), is the original police crime report, hence my knowledge of the dates - it's not my main area of interest, but you don't come across many murders! By all means e-mail me if you would like this. Welcome to the forum! |

Heanor Murder
replied on: 12/30/2003 8:31:42 PM From the Derbyshire Police Ilkeston Area Crime Book 1922 - 1925: 22 October 1922. Murder at Heanor 8.50pm. Reported by George Brough, 31 Nook End Road, Heanor, Miner. Particulars: Reported to Constable Hart, stationed at Heanor, that he had just fetched a woman and child out of Marshall's Pond and had taken them into a house on Nook End Road, Heanor. Actions: The Constable in company with George Brough at once went to the house and there saw a woman named Sarah Elizabeth Lee, aged 26 years, wife of William Lee, miner, of 174 Derby Road, Heanor. She was fully clad with the exception of her hat. Her clothing and her hair were wet, and she was being attended by Dr. Phillip Turton of Heanor. The Constable also saw a child named John Robert Lee, aged 12 months, the son of the woman, and it was dead. The doctor had tried artificial respiration but without success. The child's clothing was wet. The woman and the dead body of the child was later removed to their home at 174 Derby Road, Heanor. Bertram Cecil Ottewell, a miner of 33 John Street, Heanor, and George Brough, miner, of 31 Nook End Road, Heanor, stated they were on the footpath leading from Nook End Road to Northern Road, Heanor, when they heard screams coming from Marshall's Pond. On going there, they found the woman and child in about 1 1/2 feet of water. The men rescued the woman and child, and took them to a house nearby and Dr Turton was called in. The child appeared to be dead when taken, and when being taken from the water, the woman said "He should not have left me." She later made the following voluntary statement to Constable Hart and Sergeant Richardson, "I was going to my mother's and when I was going along the footpath from Nook End, I changed my mind and went to the pond to end it all. On 25th October 1922, she was arrested by Sergeant Richardson on warrant. When cautioned and charged, prisoner replied "I didn't." Result: Sarah Elizabeth Lee. Before J.J.A. Woolley esq, Town Hall, Heanor, 31 October 1922 - committed for trial to Derby Assizes. Before Mr Justice Lush, Derbyshire Assizes, 10 November 1922: Charge of Murder - Bound over in sum of £20 for 12 months Attempt Suicide - Taken into Consideration. |
