This e-mail is from A. Faulkner of Cambridge: "About 50 years ago my father took my mother and I to Shipley Hall park - from what I remember it was very eery and derelict. He said that his grandfather, possibly gt. grandfather, was gamekeeper at the Hall. His name was William Osborne born c.1802. Having seen on another site that there is a pool called Osborne's pool I wondered if this was perhaps a connection. Does your Society have any info. please? Also, either William Osborne's daughter, who was a dressmaker and/or her daughter, my grandmother, were dressmakers to the ladies at the hall. I found your site very interesting and shall look in again. Alicia Faulkner nee Dickins" My reply: "Interestingly, my great-grandfather was the gate-keeper, and, I believe, also a gamekeeper, for the Miller-Mundy's of Shipley Hall, living in the gate house at the entrance to the park from Bell Lane at Smalley - I would think he will have been a generation younger than your ancestor, but there may have been an overlap, and they may have known each other! There is indeed a pond called "Osborne's Pond." This was man-made, and was formed around 1770 to supply water for the new steam pumping engine at the nearby New Engine Pit, in the area now called Newcastle Plantation. Osborne's Pond was named after the farmer who at the time occupied Thorpehill Farm. It is not too unlikely, therefore, that your ancestor, the gamekeeper, was son of this farmer. The only other reference I can find (in the newsletters of the Heanor and District Local History Society) to anyone called Osborne in the Shipley area, is to a John Osborne who was in receipt of a poor rate in 1867." And the replying e-mail: "I found it quite interesting about Osborne's Pool and also your links with the Shipley Hall Estate. It would help to know where the Osborne's farm was, it may perhaps help me to look elsewhere on the internet to find the illusive William Osborne. My gt. grandfather, Williams son-in-law was Charles Sharley born 1827, possibly he was the gamekeeper, I don't know, but I have drawn a blank on him too. On the 1891 census he was already deceased as his wife/widow was listed as head of the household. The sons listed seemed to be employed in mining. William Osborne was married to a Jane Bircumshire (sometimes spelt Birkhamshaw) and there was quite a large family of Bircumshires in Heanor from the 1600's. Look forward to hearing anything else you can find out about the Derbyshire lot." So, is there anything that anyone can add to this, and I shall make sure its passed on. |

replied on: 11/12/2004 11:11:15 AM Two William Osborne's located from the 1800s. Perhaps one or the other may fit the one you're searching for? William, b. 1819 - buried 22/04/1896 at St. Lawrence Church, Heanor, aged 77. William, b. 1817 - buried 22/12/1890 at Christ Church, Ironville. The earliest reference to a William Osborne which i can locate, is W. O. m. Elizabeth Longman at Heanor - 18/09/1603. There are two younger William's too, mentioned at each of the places above. In the 1881 Census, there were 283 Osborne's located in Derbys. The highest recorded concentration of the name occurred in Middlesex - 1647 in number Hope the information may be of some use to you. replied on: 4/10/2005 8:01:55 PM This family is my direct line! Charles Sharley and Ruth Osborne are my 2xGGrandparents. Would love to exchange information...am especially interested in further information regarding Charles Sharley's being a gamekeeper, as that is a story passed down in our family that I have not yet been able to verify. |

replied on: 4/13/2005 3:50:12 AM Thanks for this Jenny! The Osborne and Sharley families were enumerated next to each other in 1851; looks as if Charles married the "girl next door". Kind regards Sally |

replied on: 11/26/2006 5:16:34 PM Hi there, I dont know if anyone is interested, but I have recently purchased an Antique Document (consisting of 2 pages) dated 10/12/1868 It is a Certificate of Acknowledgement of Deeds by Married Women! which mentions especially in this case Ruth Sharley (wife of Charles Sharley) of Heanor, Derbyshire on the one part and my ancestor John Henry Shorthose on the other. I would be happy to have these pages photocopied on A3 paper (plus the cost of postage) for anyone who might like to have them in their ancestry files. There is not much in the way of genealogical information given, but the documents could be of interest as a time line reference. |
