Ouldgeave, Oldgrave, Oldgroaves?
replied on: 3/19/2004 12:23:50 AM Glenn I didn't know the answer, but knew I knew the name, so have spent a little while digging out what I can find! Firstly, Oldgreave, Oldgrave, or Owlgreave (yet another variant!), wasn't in Heanor but in Shipley Parish. (For that reason, I've moved your post to Shipley - hope you don't mind). It is mentioned in the 1845 Burke's Directory: "Old-Grave is an ancient farmhouse, the seat of a branch of the Lowes." Some time in the early 1700's the Fletcher family, builders of Heanor Hall, who made all their money from coal mining, built a number of "soughs", that is channels to drain their mines. One of these was the "Oldgrave sough". On the 1835 Sanderson's Map of 30 miles around Mansfield, I have found it, simply called "Oldgreave." To describe it's location, for those who know the area, you travel towards Ilkeston, down Hardy Barn, then as the road straightens up it is some way off the main road on your left, about a third of the way between the road and the railway line in the valley. If you get as far as The Field, you've gone too far! There is still a farm there, but now (just to keep us on our toes!) its called Algrave Hall Farm - I have to say that I don't know the building, so have no idea if it's modern or the original - next time I'm passing I'll try to get a closer look. If you have a map, or use on-line mapping (I use Ordnance Survey's "Getamap", which can take you straight to it), its map reference is SK450452. Hope that's of some use. Robert |

Ouldgeave, Oldgrave, Oldgroaves?
replied on: 9/24/2004 11:24:17 AM In the 1891 Census, it goes by the name of 'Owlsgreve Farm'. The servants at the Farm at that time, were 4 men, 2 women. The men's names were -:Thomas Limb, Thomas Dunicliff, Samuel Whitaker and Charles Phippa, or perhaps Phippas. The head of the family who owned the farm at that time, was Mr. Samuel Fox Hunt, aged 26.....well, that's how it reads anyway. His wife's name was Camilla A. aged 22. All these name variations for the Hall/farm over the years, it makes you wonder IF we have ever really heard the original name in the first place? Azzabuv. |

Ouldgeave, Oldgrave, Oldgroaves?
replied on: 4/5/2005 12:25:13 PM In Burdett's 1791 Mapping, it's listed simply as 'Oldgrave'. Apparently, this name, or even the slight variation - 'Old-Grave', was permanently in use from c1700 to 1845, (except for the slight hiccup c1835) then the name was changed again. Perhaps someone didn't like the 'Grave' part of the name or found Records of the Hall's nearly original name c1200? Azzabuv. |

Ouldgeave, Oldgrave, Oldgroaves?
replied on: 9/29/2005 5:17:06 PM Thank you everyone for the information. Nathaniel Hunt the owner in 1881 was my maternal great great great grandfather. I'm having trouble tracing the family after 1891-1901. My great grandmother Lilian was his grandaughter and I don't know if Owlgreave or Oldgrave Farm continued in the family's possession. Her father's farm on Breach Road seems to have been sold after his death possibly for housing but if Algrave Hall Farm is still there I would like to find out more about it. Nathaniel had quite a few sons by the way who seem to all have been a;ready in possession of farms eg some at Chaddesden some at Marlpool/Langley which is why Samuel Fox Hunt the youngest took over Owlgreave I assume. He seems to have died off by 1901 along with his brother Thomas Dunn Hunt. |

Ouldgeave, Oldgrave, Oldgroaves?
replied on: 10/13/2006 6:21:20 PM Old Greave is from Old German meaning Old Mine. Coal is very near the surface here and was opencast mined on a small scale a few years ago. The present house exterior is over an existing brick building. It would be interesting to learn if anything of the 18th century sough is still in evidence. |
