The Calladines of Heanor
replied on: 12/28/2005 7:14:28 PM

Over the past 12 months Mike Deigan, Ann Marie Ancliffe and I have contributed to this thread, not realising our connections. We are now in touch with each other and also David Calladine and what we have discovered is Ann Marie and I are both great great grandchildren of George Calladine (1823). The common ancestor of 3 of us is Thomas Calladine (1749). We are all his gggg grandchildren. David is descended from his son Daniel (1775) and Ann Marie and I from his son Samuel (1782). So from 1749 back we all share the same ancestry on the Calladine line. Samuel’s son was George (1823). His children included George (1853) who is Ann Marie’s great grandfather and William (1854) who is my great grandfather. So far as I can tell the entire family was extremely close throughout the years from around 1740 through to the end of the 19th cent, most of them living in the very small Tag Hill/Nook End area. Even into the 20th cent they did not move more than ½ mile, to addresses such as Thorpe’s Road and Park Street, where there were Calladines right into the 1980’s. It appears to have been Thomas Calladine who moved from Nottingham to Heanor around 1743-1749 after marrying Sarah Parkin, but before the birth of their son Thomas. These two seem to be our Founder ancestors. It would be nice to try to establish who all their direct descendents are, and where they are, and maybe even get them together? They will include the Calladine descendents of New York! My great aunt Beatrice Annie Calladine married Leonard Allport Walker, and with their young child Laurie (1909) emigrated to USA in 1914. They had two more children born in the USA and 6 grandchildren – 2 to each. Laurie married Mary Petko. Mike Deigan is the son of her sister Anna Petko and has done a huge amount of research on the family. He contacted me earlier this year, and that led to contact with Kevin Walker, one of Laurie’s grandchildren. These 6 American grandchildren, my fairly close cousins, are like me and my brother Philip the great grandchildren of William Calladine and Sarah Armstrong. There are now great great grandchildren of William and Sarah – I have 3 of them, Philip has 2, and there are 7 that I can identify in USA but maybe more. And the offspring of Beatrice Annie’s and Florence’s other 3 sisters and 1 brother!. If you can add to the Calladine saga or want to get in touch please do so - my own email is alansharkey@btopenworld.com.

Now I have some questions:

(a) where and what is Calladine House, and who was it named after?

(b) How did Calladine Close come to be so named?

(c) who was the William Calladine referred to in other threads eg

“Dec 1858 - A deposit of £2 a-side was made on Monday November 29th, at Mr Osborne’s, “four Bums Inn” Taghill, between William Calladine and James Prince, and another deposit of £1 a-side is to be made on Monday next at the same place. William Calladine is gone into active training at Cotmanhay, whilst James Prince has taken up his quarters at Mr Osborne’s, under the watchful eye of the well-known E. Stainesby, better known by the name of “Rabbi”. Tag Hill was notorious for bare knuckle boxing.

(d) What was the result of the fight?

Any info greatly appreciated!

From the Heanor District Historical Society book "The Origin of Heanor and District Street Names"

Calladine Close takes its name from Calladine House, originally two houses, which were converted into one. It stood on the glebe land (church property). Soon after the formation of the Local Board of Health in 1854, the house was taken over and became the Heanor Isolation Hospital. It was run as a hospital until the 1920's and was demolished in the 1950's. Calladine is a local family name and so the family may have been the original occupants.

Also
Kingsway was originally Calladine House Road, the house being the Heanor Isolation Hospital, standing where the present Douglas Avenue is situated.

and
Douglas Avenue was the original way to Calladine House, Heanor's Isolation Hospital.

Sue

P.S. I also have a slight connection to the Calladines in that Charles Gillett Calladine married my ggggAunt Catherine Earnshaw (9 May 1889).

Sue

Many thanks.

You are more than slightly connected! Charles Gillot Calladine is my grandmother's cousin. His father Thomas (1848) is the 1st cousin of my great grandfather William and Ann Marie's great grandfather George. We are all direct descendents of Samuel Calladine (1782).

Charles and Catherine had 2 children - Robert (1890) and Mabel (1893). They all appear in my family tree, including Catherine, but I have no other Earnshaws except Mary Earnshaw who married William Calladine in 1818! I do not have any other information about Robert and Mabel.

I am putting together what I know in a booklet 'The Calladines of Heanor'. (if you would like a copy (when it is finished!!) please write to me at alansharkey@btopenworld.com. I am keen to find more information and especially pictures.

Although, as far as I know, I'm not related to the Calladines, I too would like a copy of your booklet when it is finished - the Society finds it useful to pick up anything with a Heanor link - you never know when we may get asked.

I should be delighted to provide a copy, although it may be some time off yet!

I was inspired to make a start by obtaining a copy of "A Portrait of Heanor 1900-2004" - a really excellent publication and good value. Is it possible to use some of the pictures, or others, in my own book?

I've replied to your email direct, but, so that others will know...

We do not mind people using our photos as long as we receive an acknowledgment, and, preferably, a copy of the publication as well!

We will go further than that, and try to provide a good quality picture for you to use in any planned publication.

And don't forget that we have hundreds of photos which have not been published. Subject to time and what the subject is, if we can help we will.

(Sometimes, a photo will have been provided by a third party who will also require acknowledgment if the photo is used in a publication.)

I too am a Calladine, David Calladine's grandfather and my father Leonard were brothers and so like you we go back to Thomas Calladine and Mary Parkin. On the marriage entry at St Mary's Nottingham it quotes "of Heanor" for the parish for Thomas suggesting that he already lived there. However the very early pages of parish records for Heanor are very poor. Someone at Derby Family History Society has suggested that I get the archivist at Matlock to get the originals out and perhaps look at them with a ultra violet light and so as soon as I am able I going to do this.
Will get in touch as soon as I have done this.

Hello Allen

I have just returned from the archive at Matlock, where my old dad Eric Calladine, his cousin Pauline Priestley, and I (Dave Calladine) have been looking for evidence to prove that we come from Aston on Trent.

Firstly Calladine house was originaly part of some property built on land Purchased by Samuel Hands of Bakewell in 1699, and sold to John Sutton of Heanor Hall in 1792. The house was in fact two cottages, which were converted into one by John Oscorn about 1800. William Calladine is the occupant from 1829, then Hannah from 1859, and finally Alfred Housley, before it was converted into Heanors Isolation Hospital, and access for vehicles was made from Cottage Garden Lane. The bungalows on Douglas Avenue, now occupy the site of the Calladine House.

Scondly, the Heanor Calladine's on my side

The last of my ancestors in Heanor was my G3 Grandfather William Daniel Calladine.

He had been born in 1827 at Hathern in Licestershire, but the famly had returned to Heanor and his Parents (G4 Grandparents)
Daniel Calladine and Alice Millington are on the 1841 Census with him.

1841 census HO 107/188/18. living at Woodend Heanor/Park and are all down as FWK.
Daniel Calladine 39, (1802)
Alice 38, (1803)
William (son) 16, (1825)

1851census H0107 2125 352, 14, Langley Mill, Heanor. ennumeration District of Eastwood
Daniel Calerdine Head 49 (1802) Stocking Maker born at Derbyshire, Heanor
Alice wife 48 (1803) born at Leicestershire, Hathern
William son 28 (1823) Stocking Maker born at Leicestershire, Hathern
Thomas grandson 3 (1848) born Derbyshire, Heanor
Emma Blyton visitor 21 (1830) born at Nottinghamshire

William Married Emma Blyton, and moved to Hyson Green - then Snienton in Nottingham.

His paernts moved to Basford, and Alice died in 1863, Daniel remarried and died in 1890.

The Grandchild is a bit of a mystery still, the move to Licestershire and back to Heanor has made it difficult to trace all the children.

going back a generation ....

Daniel (G4 GF)
was easier to trace. He was born in 1803, baptised on October 25, 1803, at Heanor St Lawrence to Daniel Calladine of Heanor and
Elizabeth Brown of St Marys in Nottingham (G5 Grandparents).

P41 of the Marriages solemnized in the parish of Hathern in the county of Leicestershire in the year 1826.
Daniel Calladine, of this parish and Alice Millington of the parish of Darley in the county of Derby were married in this church by licence this fourteeth day of March in the year one thousand, eight hundred and twenty six by me, John Sealey, Curate.

Daniel Calladine, his mark, Alice Millington, Her mark., in the prescence of Saul Bird (his mark) and Thomas Gratton.

Going back one generation again...

Daniel (G5) was born about 1775 to Thomas Calladine (G6 GF) and Mary (perhaps Rumley of Pinxton G6 GM) and baptised December 17, 1776 at Heanor St Lawrence.

Daniel Calladine of this parish (church of St Lawrence of Heanor Derbyshire), married Elizabeth Brown of the parish of St Mary Nottingham were married in this church by banns on sixth day of June in the year one thousand seven hundred and ninety seven (1797) by me John Thompson, vicar. Both made their mark in the presence of John Hammonds and Mary Parker.

Thier daughter Jane Brown Calladine (1806 -47) married Christopher Bestwick. they had seven children in total. Daniel died at Heanor Common in 1860, his wife Elizabeth died early in 1832.

Going back one more Generation we reach
Thomas Calladine (G6 GF), son of Thomas Calladine and Sarah Parkin. Born about 1749 in Heanor Wood. He married a Mary, we have et to prove it is Mary Rumley. These are the parents of all the main Calladines in HEANOR MENTIONED IN YOUR POST. Thomas died on March 7, 1836 at Heanor.

back one generation we discovered Thomas (G7) Calladine was born in 1719 at Aston on Trent, the son of Thomas Calladine of Aston and Elizabeth leverstich of West Hallam. He was baptised - 1719 All Saints, Aston-On-Trent,
Parish registers - THOMAS son of THOMAS & ELIZA Calladine bap Jan 6 1719.

St Marys Notingham, Parish register, folio ? Marriages in July - December 1743

Thomas Calladine of Heanor in the county of Derbyshire, and Sarah Parkin of this Parish, were married by Licence M Wakefield, September 1743, 17th day.

and on a very badly damaged page of the Heanor St Lawrence registers Pauline found ...Thos. Calodine of Derby bur. Jany ye 10th 1776.

Going back we think that line is thus

G8 Thomas Calladine 1680 - aft 1737 Aston on Trent
& Elizabeth Leverstich c 1680 - 1737 West Hallam

G9 Thomas Calladine 1652 1727 of Aston on Trent
& 1st wife Elizabeth Cooper abt 1652 - 1688 of Ockbrook

G10 Jonathan Caladine 1621 - 1681 of Aston on Trent
& Ann c 1620 - 1679 of Aston on Trent

G11 William Kanderdine c 1575 of Aston on Trent & ?

G12 William Kanderdine 1548 1617 of Shardlow
& Joyce of ? Aston

The Hucknal Calladines seem to stem from G9 Thomas's children, via Melbourne and we have not managed to link up the Ilkeston, Shardlow lot yet, but are a lot closer to setablishing some form of Link. The Derby Calladines seem to stem from G10 Jonathan.
