I would like to know more about the extensive tunnels and rooms which apparently run under the Church, around Heanor and as far as Codnor! They were accessible from the Market Cellar. What were they for and do they still exist? When were they made? I am also interested in tales of 'ghosts' etc in this pub. They tell me 'George' has been seen around the pub and that odd things have happened in the Cellar....ie objects moved and beer taps all turned off! I know a previous Landlord named Bernard Gillott but he is not aware of any strange occurances. He did know of a 'George' who would visit the pub every single night for a pint but who since has died, when unknown. His name was George Bruff he believes. Can anyone help me with further information on either of these subjects or related information on the Market Hotel? Anything will be of some assistance....Many thanks! |

replied on: 4/17/2004 1:57:38 PM The Market Hotel, or King of Prussia as it was called until the outbreak of World War I, is one of Heanor's oldest buildings, built in front of the old Heanor Hall. I have seen several comments about old tunnels from the pub (the subject is touched on in newsletter 171 of the History Society) but the general consensus seems to be that they are a myth - if you know otherwise, I'd be extremely grateful for any information. Certainly, a tunnel as far as Codnor Castle (which is the main story I'm aware of) would have taken a mammoth feat of engineering, bearing in mind that both Heanor and Codnor are on hills with a valley between them! I haven't come across any ghost story involving the Market Hotel - the town's most renown ghosted story, that of Francis Tantum, does involve a pub, the "Admiral Rodney", which was almost certainly the Crown Inn. If your research is succesful, I'm sure the History Society would like to include some of your work either in one of their newsletters or on their website. If there's anything specific you think we could help with, please get in touch. Good luck! |
