I started researching my family history a few years ago. I was speaking to an uncle about it the other day and he said that my grandfather used to do weightlifting demonstrations wearing a leopard skin costume at the Empire Theatre in Heanor before it became a cinema. His name was John William Redfern aka Buller Redfern. Anyone have any information about this please?

Sorry I don't have any knowledge of the Empire prior to it being a cinema, but I used to queue with lots of other kids for the Saturday Matinee and old Joe would be there with his walking stick and give anyone who was pushing or being cheeky. Can you imagine what would happen to him today?

I have only just registered for this area so I do not know if this information has been put up before - but here goes. I was researching another topic and came across the following web site which contains a great deal of information.

http://www.berniebumpkin.co.uk/page.php?domain_name=berniebumpkin.co.uk&viewpage=About%20things

The site is called "Limelight" and is (obviously) about cinemas. Hope it helps.

The 'Threpney (old 3 pence) Rush' - the children's regular Saturday afternoon matinee, were Roy Rogers, Hopalong Cassidy and similar, out-fought and out-gunned the Western baddies, even though they were out-numbered 20 to 1 at least and that's when the going was easy and their Colt 45s always seemed to be the 60 chambered variety, at least. The wonder weapon.
Come back, ALL is forgiven. I promise i wont shout or guffaw ever again.

The most BORING film ever shown here was the Deborah Kerr - Yul Bryner debacle known as 'The King and I'.
WHERE were Roy Rogers and Hopalong, when they were so sorely NEEDED.

The BEST of the late 1950s - the Bill Hayley ultimate - the one and only - 'Rock Around the Clock'.
It wasn't the Empire Cinema anymore that night, it was The Heanor 'Palais de Rock 'n' Roll', inside and out, with all doors flung wide open. Brilliant, or as we used to say - "Sock it to me, maann" - "Gimmy some skin" - "See ya later, Alligator".

The life of the Empire began in 1911, when it first opened its doors to the public. At that time the entertainment consisted of both stage and film shows.
It closed its doors for the final time in 1983. A sad loss to the Town.

A favourite memory of mine about the Empire circa 1960 concerns the admission prices - 1/9d downstairs, 2/6d upstairs (and, I seem to recal 1/- on the very front row). My friend and I took two girls there one Saturday night and he said to the ticket kiosk lady "two one and nines please" "I'm not going in the one and nines!" said his date. "one one and nine then please" he said, and went in without her! ... she paid her own 1/9d and followed him in - now thats how to do it!

The real way to do it was for one to buy a ticket, once inside go to the toilet, open the fire exit and let your friends in !
Does anyone remember Dolly the ice cream lady? Big blonde bouffant hair do-we thought she was great-I believe she went on to keep a pub somewhere Ripley? Loscoe? way

Didn't they put an end to that scam though, Suzard, with iron bars Etc across the door, which slid back when unlocked?

As for Bob's mate's example, above. I knew i was missing out on something with that 1/- row.

By the time the scam ended I was old enough to have some spotty youth pay for me-never went higher than 1/9's tho!

In the 30s my fayther won 10 bob (50p) in a yo-yo competition held at the Empire. My favourite was the Sunday night x-rated film showing. The film was the scary type not the how much flesh can the producer get away with not covering sort. A gang of us used to occupy the row of 5 or 7 seats towards the back. We used to laugh at the scary bits and usually had the usherettes torch winging our way with a if you dont behave out you go.
The Bernie Bumpkin site mentioned earlier in this thread is well worth looking at for the local history content.
The threepney rush was the best of all, film break, 600 children stamping their feet and shouting we want picture. The poor manager stood in front of the screen trying to get a bit of order. Just before the start of the serial the cleaner coming along and shouting Dont make any rivers in the toilet while the serial is on. If you stood well back you could see the screen but had no chance of getting anywhere near the intended target area.

I went to see one of the very last films at the empire - must have been 1983.

And what was this sparkling new release????

Mary Poppins!

But I too had many memories of the Saturday Rush in the 1960's

If not - where was the Ritz?
