replied on: 2/21/2006 5:47:04 PM As far as I know it was always the Empire. The only Ritz I know was at Langley Mill at the bottom of the station yard. frano PS. Just remembered another Empire feature. Before the war just round the Fletcher St corner, the word Empire was mounted vertically in light bulbs. Each letter came on in turn till all were lit then go out and start again. |

replied on: 3/13/2006 7:16:40 PM Colin Welcomw to the site - I hope you enjoy it, and take an active part. Please don't take this the wrong way, but not everyone DOES know where the Ritz was. It depends on the person's age and location. I suspect that there aren't many people who remember the Ritz before it was the Ritz - but prior to the 1930's it was the Langley Mill Picture House. From the 1930's until 1957 it was the Ritz. I personally know it as Slater's Glass!!!! (I wasn't born until two years after it closed as a cinema.) At least I did know that it had been a cinema called the Ritz. But then there are quite a few "incomers" who have only lived in the Heanor area for a few years, but are, commendably, interested in the history of the area which they have adopted. They have no idea at all where the Ritz was, unless we tell them! The local history of the area needs to meet the needs of all these different people - everyone has a different, personal, perspective on the history of the area. |

replied on: 4/21/2006 10:54:58 PM Ah! The Ritz. Fond memories of going there as a 10 or 11 year old and asking a chap in soldier's uniform "will yer tek us in mister? on seeing that the picture was an "A". Imagine that nowadays! Oh what a selection there was - Empire, Cosy in Heanor, Ritz at Langley Mill, Rex at Eastwood (if you were desperate) never mind Ilkeston and Ripley. |
