Church/Chapel Summary
posted on: 6/1/2004 10:52:43 PM

As part of my plan for a new page on the web-site, I'd appreciate a little help regarding present and past religious buildings in the area. (I'm okay with Langley Mill - though confirmation would be good - but some of the other areas are a bit hazy.)

I intend doing a page listing, and showing a number of photo's of churches and chapels.

Could contributors please list any buildings of which they are aware, expecially ones which are no longer there in their original form,

Replies need splitting into:
Heanor (or specific areas of Heanor)
Loscoe
Codnor
Marlpool
Langley
Langley Mill
Shipley
Smalley

Cheers

The one i know of personally, Robert, is the Heanor Babtist Chapel which is over the top of Derby Road, on the left, practically across from the new housing estate, towards the bottom of Smalley Hill.

Two past names of the Sunday School hierarchy quickly spring to mind - Mr. John Brough and Mr. Williams, both now long gone.

In the Winter months, it had a lovely warm boiler room to the rear of the building, where, on occasions, you could escape to if you happened to be lucky.

Mount Street Chapel, Heanor. My friends Grandma was caretaker there and lived in the house next door.
Holbrook Street (Tin Tabernacle), Heanor/Langley. John Stirland was the lay preacher there.

No it was at the top of the hill on the left. We used to live on Milnhay Road and walked up there twice every Sunday, morning service and Sunday school in the afternoon.

Ah yes. Mount St; Chapel. It always smelled heavily and continuously of furniture polish. As youngsters, a few of us helped to move chairs, benches and do the occasional dusting. But eventually, our increasing boisterousness ended our voluntary helping hands and eventually, we were roughly shown the door, then the outer gate and never more to wander freely inside again.

Chrisbrin, which side of the Chapel did your friend's Grandma used to live? Do you remember her name?

It was below the chapel and it was Mrs Robbins. I've read your post on Heanor factories and yes it is the same Mr and Mrs Robbins.

I think i'm getting a bit confused here, Chrisbrin, but thanks for the info.

The only Mr. and Mrs. Robins/Robbins who i knew at those times, lived next to the box factory (joined on, even) at the top of Mount St; on the right hand side. Eric and i used to walk down some nights with his dad, so it was the top house.

Was there another Mrs. R.? I never knew of one, but....

Mr and Mrs R moved from the house next to the box factory to the one near the chapel, don't know the date, but Eric and his wife and children lived at the box factory house after that.

We saw Eric in his yard briefly, several years ago. He was hugging plant pots about.

Was it Eric i read about in the local obituaries a year or so ago?

Church/Chapel Summary
replied on: 9/12/2004 8:40:10 AM

Okay

Now that we're starting to get some posts on the subjects, I'll list all the churches/chapels that have been referred to in the newsletters of the History Society. Remember that some of these may not have been in existence for a couple of hundred years already. I know that there is some duplication already, with churches known by more than one name. I also know that there will be the odd missing establishment - any information about any of them would be appreciated (perhaps under a new Subject Heading)

So, here goes:

Codnor Bethseda Chapel
Codnor Breach Quakers Meeting House
Codnor Castle Chapel
Codnor Methodist Church
Codnor Primitive Methodist Chapel
Codnor St. James (Crosshill Church)
Codnor United Methodist Free Church
Codnor Wesleyan Chapel
Heanor Baptist Chapel, Heanor Common (Derby Rd)
Heanor Calvinist
Heanor St. Lawrence
Heanor Free Methodist Chapel, Mount Street
Heanor Friends Meeting House
Heanor Independent Chapel
Heanor Mansfield Road Methodist Chapel
Heanor Methodist Chapel, Market Street
Heanor Methodist Chapel, Tagg Hill
Heanor Pentecostal Church, Hands Road
Heanor Presbyterian Chapel, Abbott Street
Heanor Primitive Methodist Chapel, Park Street
Heanor Salvation Army Citadel, Derby Road
Heanor Wesleyan Chapel
Langley Chapel (United Reformed Church), Breach Road
Langley Friends Meeting House
Langley Methodist Chapel
Langley, St. Mary's
Langley Mill Baptist Chapel
Langley Mill Church (St Andrews)
Langley Mill Mission Church
Langley Mill Primitive Methodist
Langley Mill Wesleyan Chapel
Loscoe Baptist Chapel/Schoolroom
Loscoe Mission Church, Denby Lane
Loscoe Primitive Methodist Chapel
Loscoe, St. Luke's
Marlpool Cemetery Chapels
Marlpool Congregational Chapel
Marlpool Independent Chapel
Marlpool Mount Zion Chapel
Marlpool United Reformed Church
Marlpool, All Saints
Milnhay Independent Chapel
Milnhay Primitive Chapel
Smalley Chapel
Smalley St. John the Baptist

As I said above, I know that there are a few missing:
Two of these are:

1. Langley Mill Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints

2. Langley Mill United Methodist

Do you know of more? Wasn't there a Roman Catholic church at Marlpool at one time?

There is a Catholic Church at Marlpool, next to the cemetery entrance.

Oops - I must pass it very frequently then - especially when I go to the Heritage Centre. Did it not used to be further along Ilkeston Road, just the Ilkeston side of Lockton Avenue?

Thats the one. Heading towards Ilkeston, Lockton Avenue, Dentist, entrance to cemetery then Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart.
Apparently there also used to be a Church/Chapel on Elnor Street, Langley Mill, opposite the old infants school, I don't know what it was called, but it was used as the meeting house for Heanor Clarion Cycling Club, probably 1940's.
