"I have recently been told that a circus performed on the land behind the old Co-op store on the corner of Derby Road and Burnt House Road, locally known as The Lammas. It is said that the lion died and is buried on that piece of ground (year not known)." Does anyone have any knowledge of this - it would be a fascinating item. |

Other Lions in Heanor
replied on: 6/2/2004 9:49:18 PM Having put that request in, I thought I ought to check the back copies of the newsletters of the Society. Although there is no information to help this enquirer, there is another Heanor lion story...... During a visit to Heanor of Messrs. Bostock and Wombwell's Menagerie, in 1910 or 1911, a boy named Arthur Moore, aged around 10, from Loscoe Road, Heanor, was mauled by a lion. Arthur got under the guard rail and went up to the lion's cage, which was on Heanor Market, and teased the lion, which grabbed him through the bars of the cage. The boy managed to get free, but had severe lacerations on his back. Okay - the challenge is.... does anyone else have a Heanor lion story? |

A Lion on the Lammas
replied on: 6/9/2004 6:05:10 PM A little more information -- my Mother now tells me that the piece of land refered to was not the Lammas -- the Lammas was the ground next to Commonside School(Corfield School) on Thorpes Road. This seems more realistic as this is a bigger piece of land and would have held a circus. She remembers fairs taking place there with a variety of rides etc. In point of fact these two bits of land are only 50m apart - so the confusion is understandable. I am aslo told that the original "story" came from a Mr Harold Pearson (still living). |

A Lion on the Lammas
replied on: 2/17/2008 9:49:27 AM I can confirm Malcolm's 'Lammas' was next to the school, I used to play footie on there when I lived on Ray Street. Does anyone know why it was called 'The Lammas'? |

The name of the menagerie and the year are different but the boy’s name is the same, I also have a notice his father John Moore placed in the paper thanking everyone. MENAGERIE INCIDENT AT HEANOR BOY CLAWED BY A LIONESS RIPLEY & HEANOR NEWS 24TH OCTOBER 1913 Some excitement was caused in Sedgwick’s menagerie in Heanor Market place on Monday night. Arthur Moore, aged 11, son of a collier living on Milward Road, ventured within the ropes, which ran round the front of the cages. He was caught by a lioness, drawn close to the bars, and badly clawed down the back and on the chest. Richard Sedgwick, the trainer, armed with a fork, induced the animal to release her hold. The injured boy was attended to by Dr. Turton, who stitched the wounds, after which he was conveyed home on a stretcher. Happily no serious results are anticipated. Previous to the accident the boy was warned by police constable Winfield and the animal keeper to keep from under the ropes. |
