replied on: 5/6/2005 5:32:18 PM Hi Jenny, Mr Harry Dennis who opened the concert with the pianoforte selection was probably Charles Henry Dennis who kept the Durham Ox for many years-he is listed as Harry Dennis in trade directories-although in 1895 he was a potter at Langley Mill Pottery. 7 Jan 1938 Ripley and Heanor We regret to announce the death of Charles Henry Dennis age 73 of the Durham Ox. He was the districts oldest licenced victualler. He passed away on Wednesday of last week and was buried at Aldercar Cemetery on Sat. Mr Dennis had been at the Durham Ox for over 30 years and formerley worked at Messrs Lovatt and Lovatt Pottery. His son Thomas carried on as landlord of the Durham Ox until he died in late 1950's Thomas was buried with his father (and mother) and the grave is one of the few remaining ones in Aldercar cemetery |

replied on: 5/6/2005 7:07:51 PM In your reply above you said "the grave is one of the few remaining ones in Aldercar cemetery". What happened to the other graves? Do you know if a list of Memorial Inscriptions exists. The reason I am asking, as far as I knew the whole of our family came from Heanor, Loscoe and Shipley. I have recently found out that quite a few relatives were buried in Aldercar cemetery and I was planning on visiting when I came to England this summer. |

replied on: 5/6/2005 7:22:51 PM Approx 30 years ago all of the headstones in Aldercar cemetery were removed and placed around the walls of St Johns churchyard (the church across the road from the cemetery.) Many of the headstones have fallen flat to the ground and are too heavy to lift. Its quite upsetting as many of my family were buried there. You can write to a society and for a small fee and postage they will send you a list of memorial inscriptions in Derbys-I'll find address and send it to your mailbox Sue |

replied on: 7/31/2005 12:21:56 PM Hi everyone Referring to peoples mentioning of having a bank in Langley Mill we do now have a cash machine at Alldays BUT it is purely pot luck on whether it is working or not! The post office recently got itself refurbished and is much easier for wheelchairs and pushchairs to use. And the Broaders family still live in Langley Mill on Bridge street and Peel street. Shops have come and gone around Netto but the carpet shop and Farmfoods have been here a while. Most people know the Vic Hallams site is now Access 26 (not such a catchy name though) with various things being built there, so far Lidl, KFC, 3663 foodservice and CCF more info on that can be found at www.access26.co.uk. |

replied on: 7/31/2005 7:14:35 PM Thanks for the input, Sprocket. Is the above further modern 'Developement' of Langley Mill, or merely further unnecessary destruction of the countryside environment in peoples eyes? Azzabuv. |

replied on: 7/31/2005 7:45:50 PM I think a lot of locals would probably say the latter seen as we have far too many take-aways already, we already have a supermarket (two if you include Farmfoods) and the other two I mentioned I don't even know how they contribute much to the area to be honest. I personally feel that area could have been put to better use, but nobody seems to ask the locals anymore |

replied on: 8/12/2005 10:34:03 PM The Erewash closed approx 5 weeks ago now. The details are different whoever you ask but most say it is because of the increasing hooliganism from local youths who were often attracted to it. As far as I am aware the owners of the flats next door to it (other corner of North Street) have bought it and are planning to convert it into more flats. |

replied on: 8/14/2005 11:04:47 AM i can't see old vic hallams site being classed as green land somehow.i would have thought it would be in the brown land class, and i for one are glad that something is being done about the mess it was in.just a pity they aren't building a multi-plex cinema like they said they would. |

replied on: 8/16/2005 12:27:04 PM It will still leave enough Azza-Langley Mill will never be a "dry" place! Langley Mill families(back on topic)-Pearson was a good Langley mill name-Horace Pearson had the scrapyard(now run by his son) and the blacksmiths was run by Pearsons (closed a few years ago when the brothers who ran it retired). Also the Phillips family (Billy Phillips the bike shop)-the Phillips family moved from Stafford to Bridge St langley Mill in 1800's and their family lived on Bridge St for over 100 years (large families)-so I guess by now they qualify to be called a langley Mill family! |
