Peter

You're quite right, we shouldn't forget the Miners' Welfare and the Working Men's Club, or even the British Legion, Suzard. In fact, I have added Miners' Welfares to the "Future Plans" of the main website - so anything that anyone knows about any of the local ones would be gratefully received (in the relevant subject area).

Completely forgot about the British Legion
Built on the site of an old house as kids we always thought was haunted,It was built by the members my brother being one having two long rooms one being the bar and the other being a function room. Not sure when it was built but after 1952 when my brother finished
National Service,it stood on Station Road just on the Heanor side of the railway bridge facing the then War Memorial.

No, but I have a similar teaser.

In the 1871 census, and not in any of the other censuses, there is a George Clarke 42 years old, born @ Codnor), who is a farmer and publican at the Horse and Groom, Crowfields (which was towards Stoneyford). Can anyone help with that one? (Is anyone able to search the 1861/1881 census for Mr Clarke? Pity its a common name!)

I take it that the Boat Inn is listed in the 1876 Directory as well?

Intriguing isn't it!

Robert, you mentioned (a while back) that you hadn't seen a photograph of the old Horse and Jockey-there apparantly is one in one of the yellow covered society books on Langley Mill

No, it was information on the Horse & Jockey I was after, as we have a couple of photos of it, but I said that in the same post as I mentioned that we have no photos of the old boys school (which is still the case!)

I've had a request for information regarding the Charles Napier in the period 1860 - 1880. Can anyone assist at all? I'll see what I can dig out.

The census returns for both 1861 and 1871 show that the licensee was Henry Fulwood, born around 1831 at Ilkeston. His wife was Hannah, born at Codnor around 1829.

By 1881 John Bagguley, who was also a miner, had taken over.

In 1891 the licensee was George Mycroft. Mycroft was still there in 1913, but a new landlord started the following year.

Hi Robert,
So we had the “Crystal Palace” at Marlpool and the “Winter Gardens” at Langley Mill!
Also an item about the Iron Works.

RIPLEY AND HEANOR
18th October 1895
TRAP ACCIDENT – On Wednesday afternoon Mr. Henry Tinsley a traveller for Mr. J. Robinson, of the Home Brewery, Daybrook, whilst soliciting orders at the Winter Gardens, Anchor Inn, Langley Mill, occupied by Mr. George Bell, left his horse and trap close to the house, which is in close proximity to the river Erewash. Suddenly the horse was startled by the noise of a wheelbarrow, and bolted along the canal side, becoming entangled in the harness, was drowned before assistance could be obtained. The animal was a valuable one.

RIPLEY AND HEANOR
18TH OCTOBER 1895
Opening of Iron Works
The old Langley Mill engineering Company’s works, which for the past six years have been in a dormant state, have recently been thoroughly renovated and fully equipped for the manufacture of stove – grates, etc, by a well-known firm from Derby. The opening up of a new branch of business of this kind will be of great benefit to the district, as upward of 130 hands are employed.
