Pickersgill and Frost made castiron fireplaces on the site in the 1940 to 60 as my brother worked there both before and after his National Service.

Was this antiquated firm perhaps 'Woodward and Horsfield', listed on the 'Heanor and Area Personnel and Employment - 1857' page, as being in operation in 1857.

Anyway, where's the Pub?

The finding re the Winter Gardens at the Anchor Inn is fascinating - I wonder what they had there? The Anchor is one of the pubs I have had most trouble finding details of - even finding it in censuses has been difficult, as it is in Nottinghamshire (so Eastwood's returns) and because it stands a bit isolated, so finding which enumeration district it is in has been very hit and miss - I think I've only come across it in one census year.

As for the Engineering Works - this could be a subject on its own right. I've got a plan of the original site on Cromford Road, when it was up for sale in the 1880's and propose doing some work on this in the future.

Pickersgill & Frost set up in Langley Mill, I think, when Turners moved from the Star Foundry to the Vulcan Works - the cutting will probably refer to P & F.

Robert

There is an Anchor road just opposite the Great Northern that leads to the canal.

I remember going to the canal as a child via the lane from Milnhay Road. When you came to the bridge over the canal, before going up to Bailey Grove Road, there was a pink? painted house. I seem to remember being told that it used to be a pub. Was that the Anchor Inn ?

The Anchor Inn was on the junction of Bailey
Grove and the lower canal of the two i recall it still being open as a child as we used to walk that way to Eastwood from Milnhay Road.It is now a private House owned by The proprietor of "Anchor Supplies" of Ripley and Nottingham.

Peter has answered the question you posed. One addition - if you go to the building, and look on the wall which faces towards Ilkeston, you can see the sign of an anchor built into the stone work - the only indication really that it is the same place.

The path which runs down from Milnhay to join the canal at this point used to be a tramway for coal trucks, before the arrival of the railways.

Completely forgot about the British Legion
Built on the site of an old house as kids we always thought was haunted,It was built by the members my brother being one having two long rooms one being the bar and the other being a function room. Not sure when it was built but after 1952 when my brother finished
National Service,it stood on Station Road just on the Heanor side of the railway bridge facing the then War Memorial.

Can you remember the house that was there before the Legion? Was it actually demolished to make way for the new building? Was it a large house, or just like the others along that stretch of Station Road?

I can't remember the Legion very well at all - has anyone got a photo? And can anyone fill in the more recent history - didn't it burn down eventually?

After it closed as The "Legion" it became a night club-can't remember the name- and it did burn down-can't remember dates or anything, but it must have made the local papers!
The British Legion was in Langley Mill before 1930-wonder where it was sited before the "new one" was built?

Robert, I've got Auntie on the case!!!! In 1940's to make contact with the British Legion you had to go to see Billy Tame on Milnhay Road.
In 1940's/early 50's the British Legion club was somewhere round the back of Edgar Parkers shop (opp Vic Hallams), where there is now a small industrial estate-weekly dances used to be held there.Aunt remembers the house which stood on the site of the "new" legion, but not who lived there-but she knows someone to ask!
Another subject-the Erewash Hotel-rumours it was to be turned into flats! Latest rumour -it has been bought by a previous owner of the Crown in Heanor (now "Ce Sera") and is to be renovated and turned into an "old fashioned" pub! Will be worth a visit if that is so!
