Aristoc
posted on: 12/8/2002 1:10:15 PM

Shame to see that Aristoc is now being demolished, after standing empty for a number of years.

As a boy, I lived on Ebenezer Street, so Aristoc was a major local feature for me.

Any information about the factory would be interesting.

My Dad worked in the despatch department at Aristoc for many years (I've got the gold watch he got for 44 years service)until being made redundant in about 1972. I believe he moved up from London when Aristoc took over Arbers, he was friends with a son one of the senior management (having "swept the floor together" when they were both lads and the Directors son was working his way up though the business and moved to Langley Mill when he did. I know he was quite upset when Courtaulds took over Aristoc.

We lived on Thompson Street so Aristoc was a constant background to our lives. Some of my earliest memories are of standing on the pedestrian railway bridge watching the new factory being built (I seem to remember that Chris Variavas dad was one of the architects?).

I also remember the big diesel generator sets in the basement under one of the buildings and my dads amusment when a couple of years after the generators had been removed Aristoc were put on a three day week during the miners strike.

Aristoc also used to have its own internal Fire Brigade with a couple of trailer pumps based in one of the garages that fronted on to North Street, I used to go and watch them practice as my dad was involved in it in some way.

Another early memory was of having yards of rubberised fabric in the house, left over from when Aristoc used to make Barrage Balloons and inflatable dingies during the war

We may have had this discussion before, but can anyone say which year Aristoc ceased operating at Langley Mill?

I finished there in 1984 and all ready imports were the main ingrediant of the factory.I don't think they were making anything of their own by then. But I thought it closed in or around 1995 but I am not really sure.

I think this is a very important link to the history of Aristoc Robert.

I started Aristoc straight from school at 14 in 1944, as a knitters lad. I left in 1949 to do national service. When I came back there were so many men had been demobbed that there was no room for any of my age group. My father worked there during the war when he had to come out of the pit. He was in the damp houses where the yarn was kept to keep it at the correct humidity. He was also in the factory fire brigade and they had to go on nights firewatching.
I remember a Sid Newman there but he was a knitter.

I left school at the end of 1959 and started at Aristoc training as a mechanic on the fully fashioned machines. (Readings). I worked under Helmut Ehrhardt. Later transferred to Seamfree working under Fred Lount. 1963 moved to Charnos, then Blounts at Belper (now Aristoc)..is it still????
I spent 2 years in South Wales and came to New Zealand in 1972.
It was a shame to see that Aristoc had been demolished. As kids living around the Puzzle, we used to know it as Allens. We used to play in the ground floor garage area, until we got chased away

Do you mean that it is "packed" into a small space, or "packed up" as in mothballed. It would be a real shame if it was the latter. Does anyone know exactly where it is and what the current level of activity is. I would be interested to hear from any employees who worked at either Langley Mill or Belper that are still there.

I think the Aristoc Facility at Loscoe is located on Loscoe Rd next to Loscoe Chilled Foods (Rydes Butchers),Not sure if its still in use though.
