Closure of Langley Mill Police Station
posted on: 12/9/2002 10:55:41 PM

When did Langley Mill Police Station (on the corner of Station Road and Aldreds Lane) close down?

Does anyone know who the last occupant of the station was? And was it used as a "lock-up" till the end, or had it become just a police house?

(I think it was built between 1871 and 1881. At the time of the 1881 census, it was occupied by Superintendent John Hancock, who was the Superintendent of the Smalley and Ilkeston Division of the County force.)

Since this was obviously a difficult one....

Has anyone any reminiscences of the police in Langley Mill (or Heanor). I'm doing a bit of work on the police in the late 19th century, but it would be good to bring it well into the 20th century. Stuff from the last 20 years isn't hard to find, but the period 1920 to 1950 is fairly difficult.

Many thanks to anyone who can help

My mother was friends with a girl who lived at Langley Mill police station late 1920s -early 1930s and they used to play in the cells (whether they were still in use occasionally i do not know). I recall the police on their rounds at night in the 50s-one policeman walked through Aldercar and Langley Mill, trying every shop door on his way. He sent his report in that all was well by using various phone boxes along the route. We also used to be reprimanded by him if we had no lights on our bicycles!

Before the days of radios, what you describe was the standard system of working "points."

Every police beat had a list of telephone kiosks where the bobby had to be at half-hourly intervals. Most of the time it was fairly easy for him, but some of them could be a bit of a rush, and woe betide him if he wasn't at his point if the Sergeant came to check, or if he was rung on the telephone.

I'm not sure when radios were introduced, but the points system was phased out in the late 1970's.

I know that the Police Station at Langley Mill was in use in 1901, but the Superintendent moved to Ilkeston in, I think, 1905. How much longer it was used as a nick, I really don't know - one day, when I have the time, I shall write to the present occupiers to see what they know about it.

We've got a lot more contributors than when I first posted this query, so let me try again....

Does anyone have any information about the closure of the Station at Langley Mill, or indeed any memories of the nick from the war years onwards?

Hi Robert,
William Bestwick
In 1907 he killed a man in a fight after a night's drinking, but a rapidly arranged inquest at the local pub the next day brought in a verdict of 'justifiable homicide.'

In the newspaper report it say's "removed him in custody to Langley Mill Police Station"
Still open in 1907

Until Ilkeston Police Station opened (can't remember the year but sometime 1905 - 1912), Langley Mill was the main lock-up for miles, as well as being the house of the Superintendent.

I reckon it was open till at least the second world war, but no-one seems to be certain.

Langley Mill Police Sation from Kellys directory
1904 Superintendant George Daybell-Smalley division also has 1 Inspector, 6 sergeants, 33 constables
1916 Inspector A Hewitt
1922 Sergeant William Thomas Wood (described as County Police Station)
1925 Segt William Thomas Wood
1932 and 1941 just listed as Police Station.
It seems as the years went on lower ranks lived there-until possibly it was just a "lock up"
By the dates it would be Sgt Wood's daughter who was my mother's friend!

M'Lud I was proceeding along the internet superhighway at a moderate pace when I came upon this address www.nottscops.co.uk. It is the website of a retired policeman and on the links to The National Association of Retired Police Officers. You are invited to email the webmaster (nottscops) so I feel sure that you should be able to get a reply to your advantage.

So, any advance on 1941? I very much doubt that it closed during the war, and would suspect that it might have continued until the mid to late 50's, possibly longer. But if that was the case, I would have thought that some of our members might be able to remember it themselves.

It's odd that this is a query I have been looking for an answer to for so long - you would think it would be quite easy.

I'll have a look at NottsCops - I visit the police history website, but they are a national outfit, and can't really help with local queries like this one.

I've got a feeling it was open in early 1950's when we used to pass it on the way to Langley Baths! I also think the cells ceased to be used before the station was closed. But I could be wrong!!!

I'm surprised that no-one has come up with a newspaper article on the subject, but perhaps they didn't make the closure public at the time.

My husband thinks it was possibly early 1960's when they closed-he can remember talking about the closure(and something to do with the cells) on his way back from visiting one of his old friends-who lived near langley baths!
My PC less friend is on the case of checking the local papers.
