Many thanks for that. Interesting that Insp Harris did not feature in the directory listing above - but it is likely that he would have lived at the station, being the grandest police house in Langley Mill.

I think you can move the date into the early 60's. I have a very weak memory of the police station at Langley Mill and of hearing it was closing down.
Where exactly was it situated? Somewhere near Milnhay Road or was it near the cricket ground?

My grandfather, Sgt Frederick Hall, lived in the police staion at Langley Mill. It would be in the early part of the 1920's, I well remember my mother (Nellie Hall)talking about playing in the cells and the stables with her brothers and sisters and friends.

Sambuk

Welcome to the site, and thanks for your contribution.

I have Sgt Hall listed as being stationed at Langley Mill from 1921 to at least 1930, and have come across his name on quite a few occasions in my preparation for the talk I am giving next month. (There'll not be anything special mentioned about him, but I will cover some of the cases he dealt with.)

Thanks Robert. On his retirement he settled in Eastwood on Derby Road and became a Security Guard at the old Eastwood Midland Bank giving protection to money transfers between branches. He lived to the ripe old age of 92.
John.

PS I got this site address from one of your members, Peter Wright.

but it has a lot of names!

The remains of the late Mr. John Geo. Steeples, ex-sergeant of police, whose death we reported last week, were laid to rest in Heanor Cemetery last Saturday. Sergts. Johnson and Hall headed the funeral procession, and the following policemen were the bearers: Police constable Bryn, Thorpe, Gee, Lacey, Nixen, and Sheperd. Rev. H. Gilgryst (vicar and R.D.) conducted the service in the parish church, also at the graveside, and gave sympathetic addresses.

Mr. John George Steeples
14th Jun 1929 R/H
With much regret we have to announce the passing of Mr John George Steeples, retired policeman, of the Market Place, on Wednesday, at 68 years of age, after about six weeks painful suffering. Deceased served in the police force for 28 years. During that period he was stationed at Calow, Shirebrook, Duffield, and at Heanor for 23 years. Since his retirement he was caretaker of the recreation ground, but owing to feeble health had to resign. The funeral takes place at Heanor Cemetery to-morrow (Saturday). Deceased leaves a widow, six daughters, and four sons.

Also in 1930 a retired policeman (Ling) aged 73 tried to kill him-self “being stationed for some time at Langley Mill”

Robert
It was still operational in the 50's, I don't know whether Roger can remember him, but there used to be a bobby Smith used to patrol around Langley Mill, and he once caught me scrumping in a orchard at the back of Hallam's house in George Street when the top jitty was still open. A few kind words and a clout until I got home and Dad was waiting with another.

Thank You JENNYPEG for your item 14th Aug. and to Peter Chamberlain for bringing the issue to my attention.
Ref. 142 and 144 Station Road. ex Telephone Exchange...This property was bought by Messrs. Wood Bros (Builders) Ltd. (My two brothers) and modernised (What a mis-used word) I was married in June 1958 and bought 144 Station Road for the sum of £750. (Mortgage of £500). We lived there for some years before moving to Milnhay Road. Of course we remember the property and conditions vividly as I used to leap down the stairs in the middle if the night to fill baby bottles at times.
Ref. The Police Station during the 2nd World War...At this time we lived at the top of Howitt Street and my father was in the Special Constabulary. This required once a week attandance at the Police Station
at Langley Mill. I have my fathers Special Constabulary Medal for this service during the War. I well remember the things that I overheard and ref. a Mr Frank Hurt of Langley who seemed to be quite a character.
I would be 10 years old at this time but well remember the remarks.
I hope that these comments are of interest to readers....Colin
