But why Sukey's Hollow? When was the path area, (on the decline part?) at the side of the Memorial Park, so named - and why? Did someone named Sukey/Susan live near the bottom of the path's steep dip at one time? Azzabuv. |

Sukey's Hollow
replied on: 8/22/2004 8:32:53 AM An old alternative name for the pond at Sukey's Hollow was "Susan's Well," so you are correct as to the derivation of the name Sukey. Exactly why the area was so named has been discussed on a couple of occasions in the Society's newsletter. The footpath used to be the shortest route between Heanor and Marlpool, and is said to have been the site of two murders in the 18th century. One of the victims was supposedly a servant girl named Sukey, and her ghost is said to haunt the hollow. Apparently, even as late as the 1930's, there were people who were afraid to take that route after dark. |

replied on: 8/22/2004 1:12:27 PM Are we on the way to having our own local "Legend of Sleepy/Sukey's Hollow"? That information is very interesting, Robert and i'll try to dig up some further information, if possible. I did hear there used to be a cottage of long ago located in the Hollow, near to the water. Whether this was during the time of the murders, i don't know. It's ALL very intriguing and deserves more investigating. Azzabuv. |

Sukey's Hollow
replied on: 8/25/2004 1:32:46 PM Several Derbys. villages are listed in various places as having a record of murderer and victim in days gone by, but nothing for Heanor/Sukey's Hollow. Except of course, for Francis Tantum and his murderer Richard Hanks, in the Heanor pub in 1785. As for Francis's ghost visiting his Mother shortly after his death - yes, i can believe it, having seen my own Heanor Ghost years ago. No 'Spiritual leaning' excuse for it either - just plain fact. If there were any long-ago murder(s) in the Hollow, then it appears the culprit(s) have vanished unscathed in to the mists of time scot-free, hence no police records/archives. But, we can live in hope............. Latest information - The second woman's name in connection with the murder(s) is a 'Nan Tantum'. The house which stood at the bottom of the Hollow was called - 'The White House'. Azzabuv. |

replied on: 10/20/2004 10:12:00 AM Does anyone remember a little sweet shop at the end of Sukey's Hollow/Westfield Avenue? I used to go and buy sherbert dips and liquorice from there every alternate Saturday when I went to my Aunts. Can anyone remember the name of the man who owned it? Ann Marie |

replied on: 7/9/2005 9:25:08 PM I wonder why the pond at the bottom of the Hollow, wasn't called Sic, like its Marlpool counterpart? - Sukey's Sic. But then again, perhaps not................ It appears they must only name them after various trees. Azzabuv. |

Sukey's Hollow
replied on: 9/10/2005 5:27:23 PM This is an eye-witness account of the Hollow of c.1910, 95 years ago, as given by Mr. Philip Eggleshaw in the very first edition of the Society's new Newsletter of January, 1970. It was always called Sukey's Hole and it started at Sye Lane by the side of the old stone-built Church Institute, now demolished. It was a gated road, leading to two fields and to a cottage with another wheeled access to these properties. The first gate was at the entrance from Sye Lane and the second at the end of a walled garden belonging to Ray Cottage, both gates had slip styles; the path then carried on past the Rectory wall which was built of furnace clinker. I think this showed the connection between the Church and the Butterley Company, for Canon Corfield's brother was Mining Agent to the company. There was a small gate in this wall leading to the Rectory and just beyond that was the cottage which was occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Parkin, who were the grandparents of the Bryan Family, some of whom still live in Heanor. There was a third gate against the cottage with a clapper gate at the side. In the hedge belonging to this cottage, was a stone post about eighteen inches high inscribed on the side 'EMM' and opposite 'B.Co'. The path then went steeply downhill and reached its lowest point at Sukey's Hole Pond, where there was a climb stile and a bridge. It then carried on up hill past the allotments on the right and passing the Old Mill House on the left, before terminating on Mill Road at Marlpool. Azzabuv. |

Sukey's Hollow
replied on: 9/16/2005 8:08:43 PM map kindly donated by azza. looking at the picture,it seems there is no ella bank,as sukeys hollow continues nearly up to mill bank and mill road. the traingle between mill rd and mill bank depicts that windmill must have been sighted there.but the jitty from east street and mill rd does lead onto a road.would this be the begining of ella bank. |

Sukey's Hollow
replied on: 1/25/2006 6:44:13 PM I used to visit the little wooden shop at the top of Sukey's hollow every Saturday after piano lessons at Mrs Platts across the road. I believe that the man who ran it was some relation to the people who owned the bungelow behind while I was waiting for my sister to finish her lesson. |
