Over the years, was any information handed down to you (or anyone you know), concerning the row of several small terraced houses and the families who lived in them on 'boundary Lane', near to the canal? A small boarded up shop at the end of the row of houses faced the main Heanor - Eastwood road. Any information from approximately 1910 to the late-20s or early/mid-30s onwards would be interesting. replied on: 8/25/2004 7:13:55 PM Thanks for sorting the Boundary Lane 'stand alone' heading situation out, Robert. At least, i wont have to scroll so far now. The name connected with the shop means little as yet, Kinza, but thanks for the information anyhow. As you say - who knows what helpful information may eventually turn up? Azzabuv. |

replied on: 8/25/2004 9:10:33 PM Brian I can certainly back Kinz up on this - from the description you give, it certainly sounds like Edgar Parker's shop - now boarded up but still there. I remember Edgar when I was a kid. What it was in the time you are looking at I'm not so sure. There was certainly at least two grocery shops on the Eastwood side of the river in the 1901 census, so perhaps that was one of them. Hope you don't mind me moving your post, but new topics are best started in a new section - all the regular visitors will read all the posts regardless of where you put the message, but it is good if the title of the thread bears some relation to the content. (Oh the power of being the moderator, and being able to move other people's posts about!!!!) |

replied on: 8/25/2004 10:14:19 PM Hi, Robert, I'm almost certain it was another name of the owner of the shop i once heard about - from around the 1920 mark. This was/is the shop at the end of the several terraced houses. Apparently the couple there at that time used to have interesting weekends on a regular basis. It's a wonder the traffic of that time could use the road outside the shop on a weekend - all that broken bottle glass about. Does that ring a bell for a name? (Fingers crossed} There's no worry about moving the post. All is well. At least your a reasonable Moderator and that makes a World of difference to us seekers of enlightenment. But ALL that overwhelming power...it must be... well, it simply must be. But you've made a really good Chat Site, well thought out and very user friendly. O.K., we'll forgive you this time. Hopefully, some names of some of those past tenants of Boundary Lane may surface one way or another? Azzabuv. |

replied on: 9/20/2004 9:26:51 PM Edgar parker only used to open on bonfire night as I recall, during the rest of the time he worked at Moorgreen pit. He was also illiterate and could only write his own name and nothing else. |

replied on: 9/22/2004 9:42:20 AM Edgar used to trundle a handcart around Langley Mill selling firewood offcuts mainly from his near neighbours Vic Hallams i agree the shop was not open often i think only when he was in and then you had to go to the back door.As for bonfire night he did sell fireworks and bonfire toffee but this was before the many restrictions that we suffer today |

replied on: 9/22/2004 10:19:04 AM Oh, agreed. he was no fool when it came to gelt. As for Bonfire night he had (so I was told) only a licence to open that day. My dad worked with him at Moorgreen for years and was the source of my info, so I guess he knew him pretty well. Im surprised his shop is still there to be honest, I photographed it in 1997 as I expected it to be demolished any time but it's still there today. |

replied on: 9/23/2004 12:03:29 PM Hi, Russell and Suzard. I was wondering if either of you could send me a copy of a photo of the old shop. I think it may warm the cockles of a 93 year old codgers heart. He used to live in one of the houses behind the shop as a young lad and then teenager and remembers the Purdy family clearly. (No, i'm not the old codger, well, not yet to that extent, as yet.) Azzabuv. |
