From the mid to late-50s, it was the Rock 'n' Roll mecca of the town. For the cost of several non-alcholic drinks, you could wile the night away as you listened to the latest Rock 'n' Roll songs/tunes thudded out on the ever voracious latest juke box. For the price of a single 'threepenny bit', you could inform your latest ex-girl friend, via the Juke Box, what you really thought of her. Alternatively, for a silver sixpenny piece, (the cost, the cost) your current heart-throb, sitting dreamy-looking in the far corner, would learn how much you were positively drooling over her. Most nights, especially the weekends, the several tables were full, leaving crushed standing room only in the Juke Box corner. But there was still room to Rock on occasions, even if the enthusiastic overspill had to use the pavement outside the open door as well. Louisa Burnham ran the establishment and in years to come emigrated to Ripley. Are there any of Loui's Rock 'n' Rollers about? Azzabuv. |

replied on: 8/30/2004 11:00:42 AM Yes I remember going to the milk bar in the early fifties.We used ride there on mcycles have 2 cups of coffee listen to the juke box (Johnie Ray was popular at the time with CRY) Then have a ride to Matlock and visit Owens Cafe ,or at the weekend a run to skeggie |

replied on: 8/30/2004 6:42:26 PM Perhaps we met in Loui's at sometime or other? Our (several of us) motorbike days commenced in 1957 and as you say, the main view outside the windows were the M-bikes parked in an orderly line straight across the cafe's front, at the kerb side. Avoided Loui's coffee, but plenty of tea and/or milk Etc. The following Sunday's Peak destination was formulated inside and on a Sunday morning, all meet on the Market Square and away. As for Johnie 'Cry'ing, all i can say is thank goodness when Bill brought his Clock to the Empire. That night, the place LIVED - inside and out, at the same time. As for getting into Loui's later that night, well, if you queued for an hour, you might have just snatched a glimpse through the open doorway. Azzabuv. |
