What year were Colleges situated above Loui's? The only place i can recollect them being was on Derby Rd; Bought some new furniture there in 1962.

Marylyn, wasn't there a small yellow model 'duck', perpetually bobbing up and down in the center of the window, its beak lowering into a glass of water?
I spent many an hour in front of that shop window, watching its never ending action. Great entertainment for a nipper.

Yes that's right. I've no idea what made it work but it was fascinating. I wonder what happened to it? He had the oldest till ever. Just a long wooden box with a window in which you wrote the sale on a paper roll and a drawer for the money. Also two great big hydraulic chairs which were great to ride up and down on after closing , he believed in things lasting, including I have been led to believe, haircuts.'Been for a Wilf' apparently belongs in the local dialect section! I used to work there on Saturdays when I was considered old enough, selling pints of maggots and lead weights.

The 'Duck' was seemingly state of the art then. I've often wondered how it worked and the only thing i can think of is a small, delicate internal 'air/water pressure plunger'. It doesn't seem logical though, but it worked, rocking back and forth without a mistake in its continuous movement. The novelty of watching it, was for it to make just one little mistake, either going down, or coming back up again. It was quite rapid in its movements too.

Eventually the novelty of watching 'Ducky no mistake', finally tailed off.

I wouldn't mind one to day, here on the desk. It was fascinating to watch.

Holland's Electrical was there, at 26 Market Street, in 1965. At the same time, Hall's Electrical was on the Market Place.

So, definitely not the same.

There's always the local business Records Office at the Council, Library (Historical) and similar places, or even enquiries from local people?
Good hunting, Ice.

George Witham owned the shoe shop opposite Birks the dress shop.He also had a Workshop round the back where he carried on his trade as a cobbler.
