It never does to miss a pub!

I have seen the Colliers Rest in documents, but I don't think I've ever seen a photo of it.

The Colliers Rest was a small pub on Lacey Fields Road, half way between the Methodist Chapel and the top of Lee Lane. In the late 50's it was run by my friend Peter Ward's dad. They moved there from Sneinton, and Peter had a Sneinton accent, very different to the rest of us. We used to sit in the back inhaling the alcohol fumes way before we were old enough to get a drink in a pub!

Just discovered in 1876 the address of The Arab was listed as Langley Common-so I guess Langley Common later became part of Breach Road.(the landlady at that time was Ann Thornhill-widow-her son Henry was a butcher in Langley for many years)

The new Landlord of the Arab Inn, in 1929, was Joseph Edwin Whitehouse.

I have been tracing my Family tree. I recently found out where my G/F & G/M were living in 1861. Both lived in Marlpool Lane Heanor Thomas Martin 1845 Eliza Hardy 1848.
In the searches I carried out on the 1861c The Arab P/H was occupied by the following family.
Richard Thornhill Head Lic Victuler & Miner 46y
Ann Salisbury Widdow 63y
Henry Salisbury Son 13y
Thomas Salisbury Brother-in-Law 50y.
Researched from Sunny Donny!

Hi Suzard,

I've just read your article on the subject of the Arab Inn. My dads parents either lived within the Arab inn or nearby. My dads
Dad was names George Arthur Tudor(BORN 1907) and his dad was named George, he married a Thornhill. Iknow it was knocked down in the fifties -we used to go and play in the cellars.
Do you have any further info on the pub?

Regardss,
Frank Tudor

kenneth,
1861 census reads
Richard Thornhill 56
Ann Thornhill 43
Henry Thornhill 13
Thomas Salisbury brother in law
These are part of my family -i have death certs, marriage cert for Henry Thornhill etc
They also owned cottages adjoining the pub. Henry became a butcher in Langley, and married Ruth Aram whose parents kept the Colliers Arms derby Rd Ilkeston. They had a son Frank, who in 1902 kept a beer of licence on Nelson St Heanor!!!!

Frank,
Which George married a Thornhill (do you have her name?)

1881 The Arab was kept by William King and his wife Emma Thornhill

The last landlord of the Arab was a Walker -my friend's Grandparents-she has the tankards from the Arab, with the name written on them-and did at one time have some of the pub tables from there. My grandfather used to frequent the pub in the 1920's.

Seems the pub was part of the Thornhill family for a long time.

Suz

Do you think that your friend could provide us with a photograph of the Arab Inn tankards? Or let me come and take one myself?
