I can just remember the baths. I was born in '65 and my Grandparents lived there. Mr and Mrs Stanway.
I can recall the big black innertubes floating amongst the leaves. My mother Kathleen married Derrick the son of the Stanways and her parents, Mr and Mrs Thornley of Aldreads Lane, were the producers of Castle Crisps.
They had a little chip shop on Holbrook St where my Grandparents also made the Crisps. They were named after the 'Castle' across from the Butchers Arms.

HEANOR SWIMMING BATHS
Heanor Council to press for "Go Ahead"
"Members of Heanor Urban Council are to press for Ministry Approval for the new baths to go forward, it was decided on Wednesday of last week. This followed a letter from the Ministry of Housing and Local Government requesting the Council to review the above scheme in the present economic circumstances. The chief officers and the architect have been consulted."
This must have heralded the demise of Devils Dyke!!

If anyone comes across a definite date for the closing of Langley Baths, I'd appreciate it - it surely must have been reported on.

I remember Langley baths, they are the reason I can't swim to this day.

I seem to remember my grandad saying that they were originally reservoirs for water for the winding engine at langley colliery rather than drinking water

The baths were certainly originally drinking water reservoirs for the area - not so sure about the pit link though.

Good to see you back after a while - you've got a bit of catching up to do!

Langley Baths
April 9th 1909
R/H
The New Baths at Heanor
The following tenders were received for fencing round the swimming baths at Langley Buildings sheds, etc, and also converting the present stone room into a care-takers house, from Mr W. Wood £141, from Mr T. W. Woolton £179, from Mr W. T. Hill £134, the latter was accepted.

11th June 1909 R/H
The New Baths
Mr Hill (contractor) was getting on with the baths at Langley, but it would be necessary to make some alterations at the swimming baths to be made of concrete six inches thick upon the top of the sand now in.

9th July 1909 R/H
Opening of Baths Again Delayed
The surveyor reported that he hoped by the next meeting to be ready to arrange for the opening of the new baths.

Sept 1909 R/H
Langley New Swimming Baths
The surveyor reported that a great amount of work had been done at the Langley Baths to get ready for opening on Saturday next, Councillor Andrews reported all arrangements were completed and the programme of events included swimming by expert swimmers.

10th September 1909 R/H
NEW SWIMMING BATHS FOR HEANOR
BRILLIANT OPENING CEREMONIES
EXCITING INCIDENT
Heanor Urban District Council are to be congratulated on their providing a much needed boon for Heanor District, in the shape of new swimming baths. Before the present water scheme, carried out by Ilkeston and Heanor Water Board, one of the chief supplies was from a water shaft, known as the Langley and Heanor Waterworks, which the Council have now altered, and turned the works into extensive baths, at a cost of £350.
On Saturday afternoon the opening ceremony took place and proved an enormous success. There was a very large attendance, and Mr. Thomas Mayfield, J.P., performed the opening part, and was supported by Councillors W. Holmes, J.P., (chairman), J. Andrews, J. Walker, J. Buxton, H. Bassford, S. Bradley, W. Stainsby. T. Marshall, and Messrs J. Holbrook (Surveyor), F. Cattle (clerk), W. C. Long (sanitary inspector), J. Marshall, W. Kew, Supt. Daybell, P. Crane, etc.
Councillor J. Andrews, who presided, said he was gratified to inform the gathering that the new baths, so elaborately set out, were paid for. (Applause).
The Surveyor submitted a detailed statement of the baths carried out. There were three slipper baths fixed, and room for four others, two large tanks, 60 feet by 30 feet each 3ft 6in at one end, and 6ft at the other end, and usual apparatus for heating purposes. There was also a cottage adjoining for a caretaker, with nice grounds surrounding, and comprising altogether about one acre. The total cost of converting the works into baths, including the cottage, was only £350. More than half this cost had been realised by the sale of the old plant, engines and pumps. (Applause).
Mr. Mayfield, J.P., declaring the baths opened for the public, said a good many of them had been anxiously looking forward to that day, which was a red-letter day in the history of Heanor. He regretted the baths, however, were to be closed on Sunday mornings, but he sincerely hoped the Council would be able to see their way to open them on Sundays, if only from 7 to 10a.m. Efforts would be made to induce the education authorities to give facilities and financial help to the school children in the district to visit the baths, and learn the art of swimming. The people of Heanor should be pleased with the progressive work of the Council.
An exhibition of swimming, life-saving methods, etc, was given by Mr. Albert Naylor (Marlpool), S. Wilcockson (Marlpool), J. Murphy (Heanor), J. R. Taylor (Rotherham), members of Derby and District Swimming and Life-saving Association, and others. Heanor Old Band was present and played selections.
Tea was served, and on the proposition of Mr. Walker, seconded by Mr. Holmes, a vote of thanks was accorded Mr. Mayfield.
An interesting incident took place. A spectator, who hails from Marlpool, got excited and jumped into the swimming bath with his clothes on and had to be rescued.

5th Nov 1909 R/H
New Slipper Baths
The Surveyor reported that the five additional slipper baths at Langley Mill would shortly be completed. It was also reported that the receipts at the baths for last month had been £13 16s. 6d. But there was a falling off last week, and it was resolved that after Saturday next the swimming baths be closed until next spring, and that the slipper baths be opened Wednesday and Fridays during afternoons to dusk, and all day on Saturdays.
RACE FOR CARETAKERSHIP
The Surveyor reported that he had received 60 applications for position as caretaker at the baths, but having decided to close the swimming baths for the winter, the final appointment was deferred.

Ice,
you now know why the water was so colddddddd!

8TH October 1909 R/H
SUCCESS OF NEW BATHS
The Surveyor reported that the baths had been well patronised during the four weeks they had been opened 2,958 persons had attended, and the receipts, included the towels and costumes, had been £30. 16s. 5d. The Surveyor also reported that it was necessary to have more slipper baths, and four more could be fixed without much expense. It was decided that this be done.
The Surveyor was also instructed to provide a lifebuoy and rope, to be in readiness at the baths in time of need. It was decided that the regulations of the baths be amended, allowing the baths to be opened Sunday mornings from 7am to 10a.m. The Surveyor is to advertise for man and wife as caretakers at the baths at 25s per week wages, with house, coals, and gas, the man to be capable of managing steam boilers, and preference to be given to one who can swim. Arrangements were also made for school children to use the baths on certain days at 11/2d. each.
Councillor Frost said when they got the extra slipper baths it would be a grand improvement. Councillor Thorpe asked whether they had had complaints about the baths not being warm enough to bathe in. The Chairman said he found them all right. The water had been 60 to 70 degrees. He thought that was sufficient. Mr Holbrook said the man could keep the water heated up to 65 to 70, Councillor Frost said it was not a question of the water being warm, it was the atmosphere, and that was owing to the baths not being covered in. It was when the bathers came out of the water that the cold was felt. Councillor Thorpe said he understood West Hallam baths were something like 80 degrees. Mr Holbrook said they did not like to have the water too hot. Councillor Bassford, in moving that the Surveyor give next meeting an estimate of the cost of covering in, said as one who had taken a prominent part in establishing these baths, and had been told previously they would not be patronised, and would burden the rates, he understood instead of being a burden to the rates they would be a great relief of rates, and if the success could be kept up for the winter there was no doubt a great many would patronise them, and the cost of covering in would not be a great expense, and would pay them for the outlay. He moved the Surveyor get out an estimate. The Chairman said he took it that this was not necessary. The Surveyor would do this without a resolution.

Hi, being a newcomer to this computer world,
in the last few weeks I have found this chat area. I have had a few chuckles at your
description of that majestic piece of engineering known as the Langley Lido !!.
Living just up the road I have spent many happy hours there, among the leaves and other things!.
The Langley Castle Crisps made by Mr& Mrs Thornley in the chippy on Holbrook st,were the best if you were lucky somtimes you got 2 packets of salt!.Mr Blake had the chippy before Thornley's.
More later if this works ?.
