(For the females, I don't know whether the names in brackets are maiden names or married names - whichever it is, the names not in brackets are the opposite - I'm sure a reader will be able to advise!) From left to right: Back Row George Ward, Walter Grainger, Herbert Pollard, Ega (Edgar?) Stamway, Dorcas A...., Herbert Whysall, William Angell, S. Clark Snr, S. Clark. Middle Row Tilly Canlin, Edie Large (Brooks), Charlotte Greensmith (Pollard), E. Flintoff (Clark), Albert Angell, Emmie Clark (Pynegar), Mrs Saxton (was Purdy), Mrs Fred Greensmith (was Darrington), Gladys Weston (Lomax). Front Row Winnie Teather (Rawson), Babina Clark, Irene Ward, Suie Flintoff (Large) So, I hope somebody finds the photo of use. But..... does anyone know what the Co-op Shield was all about? And can anyone tell where this photo was taken? |

Langley Mill Co-op Shield, circa 1916
replied on: 10/9/2004 1:46:20 PM Hi. I am a new member of this very interesting Forum. This cought my eye as there are some member’s of my family in above photo! Both William and Albert Angell were brothers and the son’s of William John Angell (was my great great uncle). William John Angell lived in Claramount Road, Langley. The lady in the middle of the back row (Dorcas A....,) could possibly be Dorcas Angell, Albert Angell’s wife, sadly I don’t know her maiden name. William Angell was married to Eshel Huns. Could this Co-op Shield be for a Co-op Choir or Choral Society? . William John Angell and his family were very musicaly talented. He was a Committee member of Heanor & District Choral Union and it is quite likely that his two sons’ were also involved in a choir or choral society. I found the photograph very interesting Regards Tony |

replied on: 10/9/2004 5:25:54 PM Tony Taking a closer look, Albert Angell is holding a conductor's baton, so I think your suggestion of a choir is looking good. I take it you've seen all the other entries about the Angell family on here (both in Langley Mill families and in the Family History Topics). It was because of those that I originally scanned this photo, but I am hoping that the other names will also get some discussions going. Welcome to the Forum, and please feel free to comment on any of the topics, or to start topics of your own. Robert |

Langley Mill Co-op Shield, circa 1916
replied on: 10/9/2004 10:06:57 PM Hi Robert. I would like to correct an error in my last paragraph! I have just rechecked my records and it was Albert Angell not William John Angell, who in 1912 was a committee member of Heaner and District Choral Union. So the Co-op Shield was possible for the Heaner and Distrect Choral Union! Regards |

replied on: 3/15/2008 2:04:28 PM The lady at the end of the middle row was my great aunt Gladys Webster(not Weston)she married Harry Lomax. Her father William Owen Webster was a manager at one of the Langley Mill co-op's, I'm still trying to find out which one. |
