does anyone know the history of Heanor Town FC? I remember seeing that they got to the quarter finals(?) of the FA cup in 18?? being beaten by Aston Villa. Is this true? It would make one believe they must have been one of the first good teams around.

I have found a potted history on the internet, at http://www.fchd.btinternet.co.uk/indexh.htm.

I'll reduce it even further, and just say that the club was a founder member of the Midland Alliance in 1892-3.

Heanor Town have reached Round 1 of the FA Cup on 6 occasions, but have never got further than that. These highlights were:
1891-2 Lost 4-1 to Aston Villa.
1893-4 Lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest.
1896-7 Lost 1-0 (on replay) to Southampton St. Mary's (now Southampton FC)
1898-9 Lost 3-0 to Bury
1958-9 Lost 5-1 to Carlisle United
1963-4 Lost 3-1 to Bradford Park Avenue

thanks for clearing my fogged memory! Looking up that first cup loss though, I found that the 3rd round of the cup was already the quarter finals! So Heanor had got to the last 32 in the trophy. I also saw at the link you gave an interesting history of Heanor leaving and rejoining the Midland league!?
does noone know anything about it?

Although I haven't lived in Heanor for 30 years, I used to be on the committee of Heanor Town. They were in the Midland League in the 1920's before falling on hard times, and rejoined in about 1962, along with a lot of other local sides. I went to the Carlisle United FA Cup game - the attendance on the Town Ground was over 6,000 and Heanor scored first before losing 1-5 ! The club borrowed some temporary stands from Derbyshire County Cricket club, and what with the cost of this, and CArlisle's hotel bill, not much money was made out of their big day!

Apparantly the record attendance at a Heanor Town match was 6411 at the v Carlisle United FA Cup match 1956.
Has the Town ground been Heanor's ground since the club was founded in 1882/3?
I've recently found a press release from the local council mentioning new/upgraded facilities at the Town Ground-but it is not dated. "Develpoement Team has representatives from Heanor Town F.C., H.T.Juniors, , H.T. Cricket Club, H.T. Bowls Club, Heanor Excelsior Bowls Club. Plans are being made for new score box for the Cricket Club, new stand for Football Club, disabled ramp for Bowls club."-sounds a fairly recent report.
Anyone have any history of the Town Ground-in addition to Heanor Town F.C.?

"The Surveyor was instructed to set out 3 rinks for bowling at the Heanor Town Ground and the Council are purchasing 12 pairs of bowls so that the public may be admitted to play bowls at a small charge"

Extract from The Heanor Observer, Thursday October 13, 1910

Death at a Football Match - The Late Mr. K. Earnshaw

That "we know neither the day nor the hour" was brought home with full force to the spectators at the Heanor v Alfreton match at the Town Ground on, Saturday afternoon, when Mr Keyworth Earnshaw, Builder, of Fletcher Street, fell from his seat and died ere medical aid could be procured.

Mr Earnshaw, Sat on a form near the pavillion during the major portion of the play when, about 15 minutes from the close he was observed to fall on to the ground. Sergt. Steeples, who was only a few feet away, and Mr. H. Lomax, ran to his aid, and a couple of seconds later they were joined by Inspector Stone. A messenger was dispatched for a doctor and the three rendered what aid they could. Their efforts were unavailing, however, and in a few minutes Mr. Earnshaw had breathed his last. Meantime, only a few spectators in the immediate vicinity were aware of the tragic occurrence, but on the arrival of Dr. Johnson a few minutes later, who pronounced life to be extinct, the referee was informed and the game was stopped.

The body was later removed on a stretcher. Dr Eames afterwards granted a certificate that death was due to a fatty heart, and thus an inquest was not necessary. The late Mr Earnshaw, who was 57 years of age, was a native of Heanor, and was well known to everybody. His genial nature made him popular with everyone, and it has been, Said of him that " if he could not do a man a good turn he would not do him a bad one." He was truly large of heart as well as stature. Mr Earnshaw was a keen lover of sport, and though in latter years was unable to take an active part in games, he dearly loved to watch a game of football. He was a familiar figure on the Town Ground, and his genial presence will be missed by the regular attenders.

Apart from sport Mr Earnshaw did not take much part in public life, though for 14 years he was a well known member of the Fire Brigade, holding the post of Vice-Captain. Two years ago, acting on medical advice he retired from membership, when he was made the recepient of a gold mounted walking stick. In making the presentation the Captain, Mr. John Holbrook,, Said that Mr Earnshaw had been connected with the Fire Brigade since its inception and his retirement was a matter of great regret to the firemen. Mr. Earnshaw had been present at every fire the Brigade had attended, and his way of dealing with fires had never been criticised.

Mr. Earnshaw leaves a widow and nine daughters, for whom the greatest sympathy is felt in their sudden bereavement.

The Funeral:
Rain fell pitilessly yesterday during the time of the funeral, which was attended by the Fire Brigade, under Captain Holbrook. The coffin, covered with the flag of England (the St. George's Cross on a white background) was placed on the Fire Engine, which was drawn by three horses. The members of the Brigade marched on each side and preceding them were Messrs. I. Lockton, C Holmes, C Wheatley, J Kerry and S. Hollingworth, representing the King of Prussia Lodge of Oddfellows; Messrs. J.T. Turton (chairman) C.J. Stone (vice-chairman) and J. Beeby (secretary) of the Tradesmen's Association; Mr J Shaw and Mr E. A. Hardy, representing the Heanor United F.C. Mr R.W.Robinson, representing Messrs. I and R Morley's; Messrs. H.J. Windle, T. Jackson, F. Mayfield, J. Allen &c.

The relatives followed in carriages, and were as follows:- Mrs Earnshaw, and Ethel, Bertha, Elizabeth, Harriett, Eliza, Nora, Nellie, and Pattie (daughters) Mr. J. Earnshaw, Mr. Brown, Mr. Judge, Mrs Baisley, Mr R Whysall; Mrs J Earnshaw, Mr F Whysall, Mr H Goddard, Mr and Mrs C. Lomax (Nottingham) Mr and Mrs I Hartshorn, Mr and Mrs Cox, Mr and Mrs G Fletcher, Mr and Mrs Beresford, Mr and Mrs Prince

The photo below is courtesy of SueGill, and shows the Heanor United Football Club in the 1910-11 season. (In view of the last post, it must have been taken early in the season, since Mr Earnshaw is in the photo.)

With the limitations on the size of the picture on this site, you are unlikely to be able to read the names, so...
