The lion chased a man up a nearby lamp-post, which happened around the 20s to early 1930s. Does anyone have any further information concerning the event? Azzabuv. |

replied on: 11/11/2004 1:30:41 PM Don't have further info on that-but my Dad used to tell the tale about going to the circus at Langley Mill in 1930's-but he said the circus was held on the "croft"-I think the correct name may have been Parliament Square-piece of land opp shops next to Smiths Flour Mill. Dad used to tell the tale of how the lion tamer would put his head in the lion's mouth-and the lion didn't have any teeth! There also used to be a travelling theatre company visit every year-one production he saw was "Maria Martin and the Red Barn"-he used to roll with laughing when telling these tales-some too rude to mention on this site!!!! |

I once remember a young lion cub getting free, and after chasing up and down Langley Mill bottoms in front of the shops, everybody ran for their lives until the animal decided to rest against a lamp post, up which a man had climbed to take refuge. It was recaptured by the circus trainer with a rope net." (Thanks to Jennypeg) |
