The large room facing Derby Road, where all the officious engagements were undertaken - Pulpit preachings, Babtisms, from the age of 18 i believe, held in a large pool which was generally covered by floor boarding near the pulpit and the partaking of the blood and body of Jesus, namely a small amount of wine in a small glass and a wafer thin biscuit plus also the marriage ceremony Etc. The large room at the rear, with its large stage at one end, was a different story. Here, the regular Sunday School classes were held. Its better name used by its young occupants would roughly translate as the 'melee room' and in the main it was. However, some of those Sunday School teachers had their own answer to the sometimes noisy boisterousness of the pupils - namely to plump themselves heavily down on to the nearest lad's lap. Very unchristianlike to my way of thinking. On one occasion, at the age of 11, i was given the task/reward of being allowed to read from the high pulpit of the officious room at the front. For a few weeks i read and learned the scriptural passage i was to read on THAT Sunday. On that day, i climbed the several steps leading up to the high pulpit or the ceiling as it seemed at the time. Being introduced to the packed auditorium, i opened the bible. Casting a furtive glance at the row after row of packed benches, i saw the mass of solumn, gloomy looking faces before me. I fumbled, the bible dropped somewhere, my prepared notes following it hastily. After a few minutes of dry throated mumblings, i vacated the pulpit rapidly, thankful to be away from the most embarrassing moment of my life. The Chapel's 'Open Days' were held across the main road in the large field which was almost directly opposite it, the field stretching down to the side of the lane which led towards the Dumbles. Laughter and happiness prevailed on those warm, sunny afternoons. Lots of cakes, pop and exciting games to play. Alas, that happy environment has now gone - all of course, now occupied by the private housing developement. Some of the times were good, but those few moments in that high pulpit paid for them all. replied on: 7/27/2005 7:49:53 PM In the late thirties Joe Lockton did some preaching there. At one time Harry Hill ran a Boys Brigade squad. We used to have outings by MGO to the seaside. Thats where we had to go to be issued with our gasmasks. frano |
