THORNHILL/NOON/CLAY of Shipley
posted on: 12/4/2004 1:04:37 PM

I am researching the THORNHILL name and have discovered in 1800's Shipley was full of them!Every other house on Hassock Lane seemed to be inhabited by a THORNHILL! They married into the CLAY and NOON families(amongst others) NOON was quite awell known name in Shipley-there was NOON's farm and NOON's cottages. In 1880's a NOON kept the "Shipley Boat"(now mfn) and was married to a THORNHILL. The CLAYS were also a strong Shipley name.
I have lots of information on these families and am willing to "share notes" if anyone out there is interested in these families

While I'm not looking at any of these names from a family history perspective, you're certainly right to say that they are names that just keep on cropping up!

If you have any general, as opposed to purely family history, information about the families, I would be grateful to receive it to see if there's enough to warrant making a newsletter article of it.

Only have family history.
I have a report on a child who got burned and died in my EYRE line if you are interested.A bit of propaganda about the use of flannelette.
What I found amazin about that was that the inquest was held hours after his death-in a room at Ilkeston Hospital. On the same page of the newspaper(early 1900's) was a report of someone who was killed at GR Turners-the inquest was held in the Erewash Hotel Langley Mill
It seems if anyone died in an accident at that time-the next day the inquest was held and the day after was the funeral!

And certainly for deaths other than in hospitals the inquests were normally held in the nearest pub!

Jenny, any info would be great-I love skeletons! Arthur b. 1884 is in my tree-which prison was he in?
Then there is Arthur b. 1870 Eastwood Notts (lived Shipley Derbys) who is closer-I can find no more info on him-he may have gone to live Leeds with his father (and stepmother)abt 1883-family recollections are that he may have been the one who went as a valet to the king. Any info you have would be appreciated.
There is also another Arthur who was b Sheffield-all in my tree-but I have lots of info on that one.
Thanks

(I'm currently researching my wife's family history, and have found that her grandfather Wilfred Amos Noon died in the disaster at the Coppice colliery in 1943, i have seen the newspaper article )

Hi,
If you could give the date for the report I could look if there was any more info given, could you give a few dates:Wilfred's date of birth or other info that might help us trace them.
