replied on: 1/3/2005 8:36:05 AM Looking on the 1900 OS map, I can only find one, but that is due east of the parish church, two fields away from it. Presumably that isn't the one that is described above? It is labeled "Mapperley Windmiill (disused)." I've scoured the maps, but the next nearest I can possibly find is at Millhouse, West Hallam. That said, Ordnance Survey only showed what was there, so if the others had already gone, the map would have no reference to them. I've also checked the 1835 Sanderson's map, which also only shows the one windmill. Interestingly, though, Mapperley itself is, in that map, labeled "Mapperley Township in Kirk Hallam Parish," which was news to me. Possibly if you were to include the whole of Kirk Hallam Parish you would get to four windmills (certainly you've got the Cat & Fiddle, which is still standing), though I can't see them. (That said, Sanderson's is much harder to read, and a lot less reliable over little things like windmills!) |

It would make a good exploratory walk round the area for any members so inclined for the remains of the other three windmills? It could be the other three vacated the scene around the early 1800s? But will have a check for them on what now seems to be a larger area to survey. Azzabuv. |

replied on: 1/3/2005 2:51:20 PM Are these the missing Windmills? 1 - Flour Windmill. Situated several small fields West of the old Ilkeston Colliery site. 2 - The Dale corn Windmill. Situated approximately two and a half fields South East of the Cat and Fiddle. 3 - Disused flour mill (Windmill?) situated North East of Stanley. 4 - The disused Baldock mill (Windmill?) situated a quarter of a mile North West of the Cat and Fiddle. These are in the extended area of search which Robert mentioned and still an interesting future walk for any interested members. Azzabuv. |

It seems to all rest on this little beauty to mark the four. All their positions are given as above, a couple of sections beforehand. Azzabuv. P.S. No pun intended, but that's life. |
