Can anyone think back and remember how many or what shops were in Marlpool. I know there was a co-op where Londis is and a green grocer on the corner of breach rd and chapel street.

There was a Grocer's at the junction of Breach Rd; and Ilkeston Rd;

In the 1960s and 70s, it used to be owned by the Mee family (no, not Robert) for several years.

Before that, i believe it was a combined Grocer's and beer-off.

In the late 1800s, it was the general P.O. Etc.
Fate unknown to day.

yes i remember that one as i used to live on breach rd in the 60s. i think the owners before that we're Robinsons. there used to be one in between the girdle shop across from the queens head, a little green sweet and cigarette shop.on the other side we're a barbers, another shop next to it that i cannot remember unless it was called flo's or florries. then the chip shop and the bookies, who ran the bookies when some of those mobility 3 wheel motorised scooters used to park there.

That's got me beat, Iceboy53.
I knew about the grocer's, because one of the Mee's was a friend of mine.

I do remember the Boy Scout place across the Ilson Rd; though.
In the early 50s, several of us used to go there for awhile, till the shrill screeching of the Arkhaila? finally won the day and our freedom.

If I remember correctly, and it is a few years ago now (ah) Arkhaila?'s name was Marjory Meakin and she lived on Mundy Street, Heanor.

That sounds about right, Ann. I knew she lived round the Mundy St; area, but her name slipped my mind.

I know she was a strict 'Arkhaila' (how do you really spell that title? It seems to change with the seasons) and ensured that the hall was kept clean and everyone stayed 'in line', as it were, but the sharpness of her voice dulled our original enthusiasm of being full time members of the scout group.

But all in all, the situation did actually seem rather tame and boring anyway.
I think she just helped us to see that our future paths, thankfully, lay elsewhere.

I think the shop you are thinking of was "Rices" they sold cigarettes & sweets. Mr Rice also sold fresh fish in Marlpool from a barrow. He used to shout something unintelligeable to advertise his presence

I left the area in 1966 so here goes. Barnes the beer off junction Gillot Street/Ilkeston Road. Billy Robinson newsagent Ilkeston Road opposite Memorial Hall( brain drain forgot name) Albert Reeves grocer junction Breach Road/Ilkeston Road. Going down Breach Road on the left Queens Head, Sid Barrett barber, you Knew you were really grown up when he asked if you wanted a round or square neck, Chip Shop Elliots ? opposite side tobacconist/confectioner, across road to bookies (may have sold tv/radios for a short time. Junction with Mill Road/Chapel Street, Co-op on left on right grocer then ladies hair dresser then Red Lion pub. Junction with East street another grocer (Spar?). Junction Mill Street/Prospect Road Ashforth Butchers who used to slaughter at the back of shop. Across from them, a bakery disused if the brain is correct. At the jitty way to Sukey's Hollow from Westfield Avenue a large pale blue wooden shop selling sweets. Not forgetting the row of shops on Roper Avenue, top one grocer then herriots newsagent etc then greengrocer then chip shop.

The second pub mentioned was the White Lion, rather than the Red Lion.

I used to go in there when I was around 15/16 - straight from school in full uniform! Still got served though!

the bakery belonged to someone called "colum bells" (or that is what he called the shop or business), i think that's how you spell it. he used to bake there and sell there. then it went into a spate of decline till some italians bought it.

The shop on the corner of East street and Breach road belonged to a guy called Billy Rice who also sold fish from a mobile trolly. The betting office on Breach rd used to be an electrical shop belonging to the chip shop next door.
And the hairdressers that is on the corner of Chapel street and Breach rd used to be an house with an wooden shed round the back which used to double up as a chip shop.
