Well It would have been around 1960 and I think we did get threatened she would shoot us but we didn’t take that seriously. Incidentally when the Hall was being demolished we had a good look around and I ended up falling through the floorboards.

Tell me more.....

I wrote an article for the Society newsletter this last year on Aldercar Hall from the 1850's till the 1920's.

I intend doing one for the coming season from the 1920's to the end, so absolutely anything that you can remember would be of great interest.

(And, of course, your contribution would be acknowleged.)

Well I don’t think I have many things to tell. When we got the chance to explore the Hall during demolition (where was health and safety then) I was able to walk around the gardens to the side and back, and It was clear that they had been quite splendid in their day, I particularly remember the summer house. From the drive there wasn’t a very good view of Hall, just a grey dowdy looking facade hidden mostly by the horse chestnut trees. One day around 1960, it must have been getting near to Guy Fawkes Night, our conker collecting turned to log collecting. There where many branches on the floor already and as usual we got carried away attacking quite large logs with just a rusty billhook, taking turns to get blisters on our hands. All this time we kept one eye on the Hall entrance for the occupant to arrive, but we should have been looking the other way, because just then the constable arrived with his trusty bicycle, we emptied our pockets for him to investigate answered is questions and trooped off home empty handed. This policeman a rather plump man always seemed to turn up when we where up to mischief, he was very good or very lucky.Or the Hall had a telephone
