A rare picture. |

replied on: 2/18/2005 8:08:55 PM Nice picture of east view terrace, those iron railings are still there today! you see the drainpipe on the far end of the building, top clearly visible in the middle of the picture? I used to climb that pipe right to the very top, to collect pigeons eggs!! well i was only 8 years old!!! Interesting to look at the picture of the workmen, and what health and safety would make of it today!! no hard hats, no security fencing to protect the public! and the list could go on!. How times have changed. Has anyone got any more pics of east view terrace? or the gas tanks that were there? kinza |

replied on: 2/18/2005 11:33:24 PM Kinza Yes to both questions - I'm ploughing my way through hundreds of photo's and slides at the moment. I've come across one taken from a bedroom window on Thompson Street, which includes the back of some of East View Terrace. And a decent shot of the gas tanks too. Will post them as and when..... replied on: 2/22/2005 1:29:48 PM I remember it well, lived from there 1950 to 1954. Second one from far end either 11 or 13. W alays used to call it Gas Tank Avenue. Family living at No 3 had a parrot which used to be put outside on it's perch if the weather was sunny. The house had gas lighting and the tin tub in front if kitchen grate, the black leaded sort. I was born in 1950. My father used to work at G R Turners with the beer off just below the main gate. The picture of 5 workers outside the beer off emptying pint glasses will always be with me. |

replied on: 2/24/2005 9:45:59 AM Hi philfred The second house from the end would have been 13. We lived at no' 12 but that was later on from yourself, 1966-67 i think it was when we moved in there. I remember a little old lady living at i think no' 9 her name was mrs garnet, she was the only person on the row who kept the gas lights in the house, everyone else had electricity. kinza |

replied on: 2/24/2005 5:09:44 PM Were you in Langley Mill before you moved to East View Terrace? If not, I'd have put you moving in no later than 1966, and possibly 1965, as I remember your brother from Elnor Street Infants, and I moved to Sedgwick Street Juniors in September 1966. |

replied on: 2/24/2005 10:56:56 PM It was definitely at Elnor Street, and it was definitely Rodney. As for the teachers at the school - I haven't got a clue. But it's given me an idea for a new topic....... |

replied on: 2/25/2005 5:05:46 PM It is a mystery, as I'm pretty damn certain - I can see him stood in the playground at Elnor Street school, and I also have a picture of him in a class photo at Sedgwick Street...... Despite my lousy memory, I am 99.5% sure here - so, what explanation could there be? What year was he born in? |

replied on: 2/26/2005 1:03:31 PM Memory's like that..... .... but I'm not convinced, especially since I was also born in 1959, so I'm obviously thinking of the right member of the family to be in my year at school! I'll have to accept that I'm wrong, but (clutching at straws!) is it possible that the family had a trip over to Langley Mill prior to moving, so as to arrange school places, etc.? (My memory of Rodney at Elnor Street is one of only two memories I have of the place! As my memory is appalling!) |
