Has anyone heard of these premises? I wonder why it says "Codnor & Loscoe" rather than just one of them (both villages were in the same parish, which might explain it.) Is anyone able to delve into the two names mentioned - I'd be interested if they moved from/to other pubs. |

replied on: 2/1/2005 9:26:52 AM It certainly looks like the reporter got it totally the wrong way round - nothing unusual there then!!!! It was also not unusual for the keepers of smaller pubs to record their "day job" on the census returns - I've come across that numerous times. Thanks for your help Peter. |

replied on: 2/1/2005 11:58:36 AM It could be the reporter was correct? From where the 'Sportsman's Inn' stood, opposite the entrance to Wright St; on Jessup St; there stood another two pubs at the opposite end of Wright St; This was at the Wright St; - Mill Lane junction, one pub standing across Mill Lane and practically facing each other. Unfortunately, these two pubs are not named on the 1896 map. Could one of these have been the missing 'Postman's Inn'? Azzabuv. |

replied on: 2/1/2005 11:28:56 PM What year was the 'Sportsman Inn' built? The 1896 map still shows only one pub on Jessop St; - the one opposite the end of Wright St; with the other two on Mill Lane. No pub is marked as being near the main Rd; at the end of Jessop St; Any ideas, anyone? Azzabuv. |

replied on: 2/2/2005 1:07:43 AM Don't know, but having had a few tipples in there myself, I would say it was the same age as the rest of the terraced houses on the street. I do have a memory of the Sportsman, which is much more recent local history, but nonetheless of the same social importance. In the late 1970's I went there with my wife-to-be, my brother and his girlfriend. Tony's girlfriend wanted a pint, which they totally refused to serve her. Not a lady's drink! Things change! |

replied on: 4/8/2005 10:49:00 AM Hi I've just discovered my Shaw ancestors were from Loscoe and found your page with reference to a Shore being a publican in Loscoe area. Is there any way of tracing this back to an earlier generation to see if this Thoams Shore was connected to an Edward Shaw who was also a hotelkeeper I believe in Loscoe. I have no idea of hotel name as this information is from death cert in 1897 for Edward's son Thomas in Australia. |

replied on: 11/14/2006 12:12:02 AM We never got a reply to this one. Can anyone look up Thomas George in the 1891 and 1901 census, and see if he was a licensee in Codnor. |
